A Black Woman's Prayer

Dear God, I have a favor to ask
Because of where I’ve been.
I’ve been without for oh so long
Please give me peace within.

I’ve tried to do the best I can
But I’m beginning to feel some doubt.
Peace within would help me win
Because there is no peace without.

You’ve given me talents I have not used.
The tools are in my hands.
But I am without peace within
And no one understands.

I’m a woman alone in a world you made
Ruled by rich white men.
There’s a message I’d like to give them.
All I need is peace within.
AMEN

Just Sitting Here

I’m just sitting here drinking coffee.
The morning air is so crisp and clear.
I know there’s so much going on out there
While I’m just sitting here.

Too many people are roaming around out there
On a day they’re destined to roam.
They’ll push their carts up to garbage bins
Too many people – who have no home.

Too many children are left unattended
Because their parents have sold out to dope.
Too many children in reckless situations
Too many children – too little hope.

Someone’s loved ones are saying their last goodbyes
In a hospital room filled with tears
As they each have to deal with losing this person
This person they all loved for years.

My heart is weeping for all of them.
I’m just a person who really does care.
And someday I’ll do something about it
But right now – I’m just sitting here.

A Writer Writes

A WRITER WRITES, THAT'S WHAT THEY DO.
THAT'S THE WAY THEY EXPRESS THEMSELVES.
THEY LIVE, THEY LOVE, THEY WRITE, THEY DIE.
LATER THEIR GREATEST WORKS ARE FOUND ON OLD SHELVES.

A WRITER WRITES. THAT'S WHAT HE DOES.
HIS LIFE AND HIS DREAMS MUST BE TOLD,
MUST BE SHARED AND PASSED ON AS EXPERIENCE
THAT HE BOUGHT AND THROUGH WRITING HAS SOLD.

A WRITER WRITES. THAT WHAT SHE DOES.
SHE BRINGS SMILES, TEARS AND LAUGHTER
WITH THE CHARACTERS SHE CREATES TO LIVE
HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

A WRITER WRITES. THAT'S WHAT WE DO.
WE CREATE POETRY, SCRIPT AND SONG.
WE'RE GIFTED WITH THE MIGHTY POWER OF THE PEN.
WRITERS MAKE THE WORLD GO AROUND.

A WRITER WRITES. THAT'S WHAT I DO.
THE ONLY WAY ONE CAN REALLY KNOW ME
IS TO READ THE WORLD AS I SEE IT,
THAT I TRANSLATE INTO POETRY.

A Mother's Thank You

A mother’s thank you brings tears to your eyes.
It comes straight from the heart.
A mother’s thank you is specialized
Right from the very start.

She loves and she protects
She comforts through the night.
She wipes away the tears
And makes everything all right.

A mother’s thank you is coated with love
And hugs and chocolate kisses.
A mother’s thank you brings happiness
And all of your fondest wishes

A Band of Angels

A BAND OF ANGELS

I already knew that love comes with stuff
But I didn’t know that stuff comes with love
Until a fire destroyed all of our things.
And I looked to heaven above

I cried out “Lord, thank you God!
For saving me, my family and friends.”
No one was hurt. No lives were lost.
Lord knows there could have been.

We stood watching in the middle of the night
As flames claimed all of our things
We comforted each other
Under the umbrella of angels wings.

Little did we know at that time
That God was sending us more stuff.
Blessing us abundantly
Supplying more than enough.

Thank you Merced, CA community
Thank you family and friends
For allowing the Lord to use you
In Jesus’ Holy name,
Amen

31 Years of Motherhood

31 YEARS OF BEING THE HAPPIEST MOTHER
IN ALL THE WORLD
IS TRULY SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE
BECAUSE MAKEBA IS MY LITTLE GIRL

I TAUGHT HER TO GRAB LIFE BY THE TAIL
AND NEVER LET IT GO
KEEP SMILIN-THAT’S MY LEGACY
THE BRIGHT SIDE WILL ALWAYS SHOW

SOMETIMES WHEN THE WATER SEEMS TOO ROUGH
I TRY TO STOP HER FROM JUMPING IN
BUT I RAISED A STRONG BLACK WOMAN
HER MISSION IS TO WIN

I’M PROUD OF HER-SHE’S BEAUTIFUL
I’M THE LUCKIEST MOTHER IN THE WORLD
SHE’S 31 NOW AND MY BEST FRIEND
BUT SHE’S STILL MY LITTLE GIRL

Forgotten

Ding dong, hear the bells of Christmas.
Wind songs of the holiday.
How many bells are ringing
How many bells are singing
A sad song that belongs to yesterday.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.

How many hearts have wandered to the alleys?
How many minds have simply gone astray?
A face that once held laughter
Spends Christmas in the park
Hypnotized by Christmas bells
That ring and sing till dark

If only they could bring back yesterday…
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.

Eyes that used to sparkle
Have hallowed with time.
No one was there to listen
No one could spare a dime.

The children of the past – they don’t remember
The happiness that came with each December.
They don’t even know what made the minds go astray.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.

Inaugural Prayer For Barack Obama

Dear Lord, as I sit here watching the Inauguration
Of the 44th president
Of the United States of America
A black man, heaven sent.

Thank you Lord for Barack Obama
Michelle and the girls
Thank you Lord for this man
Who is uniting so many worlds

Thank you Lord for answering his prayers
Because we know that Lord with you
A wish is just a word
But prayer can make your dreams come true

‘My Country Tis of Thee’
Seemed to have been written for this day
Tears streamed down the face of America
There are not enough words to say

Not enough words to say for my Daddy
Who served the United Stated Army for 24 years
Not enough words to say to my mother
Whose words are mixed with silent tears

Not enough words to say why my mind keeps going
To my grandfathers, Grandpa Jerry and Daddy Bryce
The lessons I learned from their footprints
Of a black mans’ spirit and a black mans’ spice

The spirit and spice of a black man
Is made of courage, endurance and pride
It’s covered with the blood of Jesus
And ancestors who fought and died.

The spirit of the black man is leading our country now
Barack Obama - product of prayers that did not end
Thank you Lord for this great and wonderful day
Please protect him, Heavenly Father
Amen

Murder Without a Conscience

Please forgive me Lord for murdering my children.
My heart is flooding with tears.
I’m sorry – Lord I’m so sorry
Why did it take so many years?

They weren’t even real to me Lord
Not until today.
Oh God, I’m so sorry
I really don’t know what to say.

Lord, those were my babies!
I didn’t give them a chance.
Murder was part of my lifestyle.
It was just another dance.

Lord, I know you’ve already forgiven me.
Please help me to forgive myself.
Please help me to stop some mother
From murdering somebody else.

Lord! Lord! Lord! I’m sorry!
I can hear my babies cry.
They never got to call me mommy
And they don’t understand why.

Bye Daddy

Goodbye Daddy, I really miss you.
My life will never be the same
My heart will always fill with love
And pride when I hear your name

You always said I should celebrate
When it was time to say goodbye
With people telling your life stories
So I could laugh more than I’d cry.

Everyone’s telling their stories, Daddy.
Stories I’ve never heard
We laugh, we cry…I want to hear them all
I’m clinging to every word.

One of my favorite stories
Is a birthday party you gave for me
Your last dance was with our dog
You believed everybody needs to party

I want to say thanks for being My Daddy
And thanks to everyone in your world
Please keep telling his life of stories
To this Daddy’s Little Girl.
