Long Strand

I watch you cast your line
into the silver sea,
Millions of sand grains
between you and me.
I hear the wispy reeds
dancing in the dunes
On Long Strand
on a sunny August afternoon.

I lie amongst the smooth stones
under the sky.
Where cotton-ball clouds
go sailing by.
I feel boats out at sea
washing waves towards me.
And you and I on Long Strand,
our hearts full of glee.

Drunken Fairies

Drunken fairies flutter by hedges,
Friesian heifers graze grass to the edges
Of fields where tufts of meadow grass grow,
Smothering weeds and roots below.

Snowdrops

I found you on St Brigid's Day,
Your brave little heads had pushed through
To feel the cold crisp February air.
Standing tall and strong, determined.
White blossoms dancing,
Celebrating that Spring was here,
Your perfect petals dancing in the wind,
Bringing hope to my day.
Like Brigid, you took away all my despair.

Summer Sun

She comes gradually every June.
And hides behind the summer moon.
Shines on us with brightness and glee
Forgetting that darkness wants to be.

Knocking routine and time assunder,
Waking us up in awe and wonder.
Lengthening days and warming hearts
Til Autumn comes and she departs.

The Chair

His chair stands alone in silence,
Broken and worn,
With a chunk of cheap plyboard peeping through.
As simple as the day it came to be.
No sign of him.
Silence envelopes it.
Thirteen years have passed and still his chair
remains my precious jewel,
It stands amongst the mice traps, bags of turf and children's shoes
Every dent and scrape a memory of love and warmth.

Oh how I wish his hands could fix it now.
But transience of time will not allow.

Marley

We went to pick him up,
Travelled North in total ignorance,
Excited but full of nerves.
The car was packed with all the gear,
A metal crate, blankets, towels,
And three excited children full of glee.
And then there he was, a ball of fluff,
A most beautiful dog
Wearing a pink collar with brown eyes.
No words were needed,
It was love at first sight.
Cash was given, papers signed.
The deal was done, he was ours.
Back we drove, hugging, cuddling,
We took him home and looked at him for hours.
Ignorance was bliss.
We hadn't a clue what lay ahead.
But we were happy and the children went to bed
Dreaming of Marley and all the fun that lay ahead.

Lost

Lost

Left lagging behind.
Numb, upset, unfortunate, unlucky.
Everyone else getting on with it.
But I'm left in limbo.
Brain fog adding to my fear
At a distance from them all,
Even with him, a lack of intimacy exists.
Arguing with me, no sympathy, like a stone.
‘Get on with it’ he says.
‘Stop moaning. Take action’.
So easy for him to say.
What a mess!
I walked on clouds so foolishly,
Thinking I stood a chance, so proud.
My dream was coming through.
But once again, shattered, deflated, heartbroken, I fell flat.
What a fool I was to even think for a moment it could have been me.
As if! Me? Wake up girl and smell the coffee.
You never stood a chance.
You were led up the garden path!!
It's okay for your friends to be successful but not you.
Your dream will never be! Accept it! Get on with it!
No one has threaded softly on my dreams.
They've trampled them.
I'm lost.

Pretty Primroses

Such delicate flowers, perfectly perfumed.
Yet brave enough to stick the sting in the air.
You take me back to the 'high fields' of my childhood, away from County Kildare.

As a child, I would pull the short stems to make a fistful,
Then smell the little bouquet in my hand.
Breathing in the pure, fresh, delicate scent.
That wafted from the petals and the land.
And off I'd run, back down the boreen,
To place my primroses on the May altar my father had made.
Those precious primroses, ever so gentle,
Abundant in the hedges in Kildare.

Trimmings

They've trimmed the tops off trees outside,
Where will the black crows now reside?
Perch upon the remaining stubs up high
To view the cold but clear January sky?

They've trimmed the tops off trees outside,
There's nowhere left for the crows to hide.
Perhaps they'll pepper the park trees left behind
And contemplate why humans are unkind.

Do the Birds Know

Do the birds know there's a virus on earth?
Have they noticed we're keeping our distance?
Have they seen us walking alone on the roads?
Do they know it's a lonely existence?

Do the birds know life isn't the same?
Have they noticed the skies are peaceful?
Have they heard the silence in playgrounds and schools?
Do they know that the virus is lethal?

Do the birds know why we're all wearing masks?
Have they noticed our struggle when breathing?
Have they tasted the food being thrown by our hands?
Do they know that we're quietly screaming?

Do the birds know why humans are dying?
Have they noticed in far away lands?
Have they smelled the odour of death in far places?
Do they know why we're washing our hands?

Yes the birds know there's a virus on earth
They sing every morning with sweetness
They fill our days with colour and song
And take away some of our bleakness.
