Cardinal

small songbird cardinal
your bush cut down from the storm
small cardinal no more

Set the House On Fire

My limbs burn with
something
I thought I’d forgotten,
something stiff and cold
sounding suspiciously
like the static
on a broken tv

The spiders
in the corners of my vision
weave their webs
over and under
and under and over
a grinding noise
behind my eyes
that means movement

What movement means
(these days)
is something
falling off the bone
turning into
a suffocated pile of flesh
for the flies to inspect
and tuck into

The sun
must have come up
but I can’t tell what’s up
or down
or right
or left

So I’ll just have
to settle
for a burning flashlight
that gets so hot
the plastic around the bulb
melts

Causes something
of a fire
near my chest
which spreads
until all that’s left
of these quiet walls
has turned to ash
