Codependency

Her logic binds with golden ties and strands of silken thought
her elocution sparkles, it's a skill she has been taught.
Her lies are better than the truth, a drug that dulls defenses,
And I give up my reason to explosions of the senses.

Why, oh why, has she decided she should be my muse?
A toy of easily molded clay detained for her abuse.
Her eyes are fire, hold her gaze, you do it at your peril.
it only takes a glance to see how wild she is, quite feral.

Deceit is taught in many forms and she deploys them all
walk the line, a slackened rope, and teeter 'fore the fall.
Why have I been cursed you ask, and I can hardly say.
The truth is that I wouldn't want it any other way.

Politics of Logic

I use to be a man of logic, wrapped within my intellect.
The world neat and ordered, in a word perfect.
Right was right and left was left and n’er the twain should meet.
The politics of thought were static, savory and sweet.
Oh the innocence of youth.

A man of faith with little time to linger on the pain.
I blithely passed by every day, averting eyes again.
And in my house of worship was a box to aid the poor.
I often dropped in my two bits while walking out the door.
Oh aversion to the truth.

But now I am confronted by realities of life.
How caste-like is our system while we smile and twist the knife.
We blame those locked below us for the pain that we inflict.
And struggle to move higher, oh my friends we have been tricked.
How I struggle with the wonder.

What would be the end result if my pie piece should lose a sliver?
Would I even miss it were I a more generous giver?
How much is enough in this democracy of greed?
And where is my humanity within this life I lead?
Oh the questions that I ponder.

The Lines Not Crossed

‘Tis not a sword, but mightier, the ink but darkened blood.
It takes me to the lofty peaks or rolls me in the mud.
It hands me my humanity, upon a polished tray.
And with a lapse in word or deed, jerks it all away.
And with a lapse in word or deed, jerks it all away.

‘Tis ever cloaked in mystery, yet open to the sky.
Influenced by the History of the days that have gone by.
I reach for subtle crafting, the wit, the pain, the joy.
The written word, the power has, to heal or to destroy.
The written word, the power has, to heal or to destroy.

And who am I to wield this pen? A right domestic scribe.
Who writes, and writes and writes again, a frantic diatribe.
I see the words ephemeral, I grasp for visions lost.
The grandest of illusions are the lines I haven’t crossed.
The grandest of illusions are the lines I haven’t crossed.

Kick It Down

I see you standing by the door, your hesitancy clear.
Enter to be fawned upon, embraced with love my dear.
And yet there is that moment, a tension lost in thought.
Your prior self is lurking and it bothers you a lot.

You know the story, heard the cries, the sobbing in the night.
You hope it is within your grasp to set the damn thing right.
And yet I see you holding back, your knuckle in your mouth.
It wouldn’t take more than a nudge to send the whole thing south.

The prior year has set a standard not so very grand.
And your job is to rush the stage, a most courageous stand.
Where 2020 squeezed us in an iron-mailed fist.
2021 you’re here to show us what we missed.

The endless possibilities flash by in fading light.
Very little grace recalled, but tons and tons of spite.
And you still stand there by the door, your hesitancy clear.
Kick it down, step inside, we need you brand New Year!

Appearances Aside

He stands so tall
He looks so fine
His clothes are pressed
He toes the line
He drives the road
In new Mercedes
Nearer Heaven yet than Hades

Some would kill to have his life
And he drives home to beat his wife
Appearances aside.

Not Like You

I would never stoop myself to do the things you do.
Nor drop down in the gutter swimming in that toxic stew.
I hold myself to higher standards, not like some I know.
And when I start MY rumors I know when it’s time to go.

We have naught in common though your common label fits.
You’re average in every way, with no distinguished bits.
And I am glad my standards hold me up so tried and true.
I’m shocked when I discover that I’m rather worse than you.

Obsession

I miss you, need you, want you
Oh thou cruel hearted beast.
When I close my eyes I find the one I see the least.

Wrap me in your warm embrace, caress me while I weep,
Darling let me find you
You’re my one obsession, Sleep.

Seek me in the morning in the grey light of the dawn,
Desert me in the evening when the day has come and gone.

Touch my tired eyes, I give you every dream to keep,
Darling let me find you,
You’re my one obsession, Sleep.

And when I slip beneath the waves, my mind no more distressed,
Hold peace within the moment, and on my pillow rest,

Gift solace in a minute stolen, slumber ever deep,
Then break me on the morrow,
You’re my one obsession, Sleep.

Just Rage

Rage at the anger, rage at the spite.
Rage at the evil that hides in the light.
Rage at injustice, rage at the pain.
Rage at the loss and rage at the gain.
Rage at the rich while you rage at the poor.
Rage at the doorman, who shows you the door.
Rage at your husband, rage at your wife.
Rage at the infinite limits in your life.
Rage at the pardons, rage at the war.
Rage at the after, and rage at before.
Rage at the darkness, rage at the night.
Rage ever on against the dying of the light.
Just Rage.

Over Confidence

A whispered breeze, the squeak of wax.
Virgin powder, two ski tracks.
A quiet lift, an uphill ride,
Gravity again denied.

A rock, a lip, the skis take flight.
In air the grace an awesome sight
Slams to earth, a desperate spin,
Damn I caught my tips again...

Goodbye 2020

We wave goodbye, one last time, emotion grand and high.
Feeling days ticking down, nary an eye is dry.
Dodge the door, it could attack, a right malicious ride.
Careful of the swing back now, just take it all in stride.

When first you came, we held our breath, for how bad could you be?
It didn’t take us very long, before we all could see.
You stole our breath and innocence, our health, our means, our ends.
And left us isolated from our family and friends.

We thought that you would never go, the visit quite unending.
You wore out every welcome here, we find ourselves defending.
And now we see the end in sight, it fills us all with cheer.
Our spirits rise, we see you out, you vile, vile year.
Goodbye 2020.
