Have Faith

Tomorrow the earth will still move around the sun-
a sun that will glimpse through thick clouds
leaves will fall from trees and winds may blow
snow will cover mountain tops yet,
I will rise and eat breakfast and shop
some worry that the end is nigh
to everything there is a beginning and an end
creation, Adam and Eve, the apocalypse
Tomorrow, people will fall in love, and out of love
crimes will be committed and sins absolved
some worry that God is punishing us with a virus
He that forgives? He who loves?
we are his creation- created out of love
live each moment- for we are in His hands
I do not hear the approach of the apocalypse
because I have faith, I have hope.

Lost

I write with a hand you once held how I love to recall,
I look into a mirror where once we saw ourselves reflected,
Now my hands shake and the mirror lies.

I walk alone along the seashore where once we did together,
Our belief in our innocence we were safe in the bosom of our land,
Now I know that we were fooled.

Now my legs ache and I tire easily so I walk home alone,
I sit in my old armchair though it is now threadbare with age,
I gaze through a closed window.

I have cried more tears that can be counted, for you, for me,
They fall silently for there is no one to hear my cries,
And our portrait still hangs on my crumbling wall.

A Lovers Note

Gentle waves rolled in so white and fluffy
from a sea so blue it made me feel happy
I paddled bare feet in it's warm white foam
all of my thoughts so far from home
when all at once I saw bobbing there in the waves
a message in a bottle- was someone hoping to be saved?
I opened up its rusty lid- a lovers note which said-
'I love you so with all my heart-why did we ever have to part'?
I wondered for whom this note was meant
and, from whose heart it had been sent
I stood and pondered for a while-then sent it back to sea
you see I know this lovers note was meant for someone
but that someone was not me.

Thysia- Sacrifice

Oh! those gods of ancient times who looked kindly upon this land-
and its people- it was from their hearts we toiled while they dwelt silently among us- they who witnessed the blood we shed.

Oh! how we cried out their names for liberation as they guided us to command an army - to fight for that which was ours.
See how they witnessed as the earth turned red.

Oh! how we prayed to our Mother when our bellies were empty- our backs broken, and the dead lay on the ground,
Did we not see as the Eagle soared above us while a hot sun burnt our skin.

Oh! see now how they sleep, easy and comforted by our sacrifices- our toil and
our suffering - does not the Mother herself smile upon us with affection?
Our sons gather about her safe in eternal peace.

I Am

I am like a bird whose wings have broken and cannot fly-damaged,
fluttering hopelessly on the ground seeking the sky
I am like a whale who swam too close the shore, stranded
thrashing about in the waves yearning for the open sea
I am like a tree who bares no leaves as I sway in the breeze-
standing tall in the rich soil, yet diseased and dying
I am like a sky without moon and stars to light me-dark
waiting like a fire that has turned to ash
I am like an island that has been consumed by the sea-forever lost-
once people roamed about me and played on my shore
I am like the gift wrapped in gold with promises of riches-fake
my bows and paper a delightful sight- with nothing inside.

I was a flock of geese flying high -wild and free
soaring above fields of green- over the sea to distant lands
I was a graceful whale swimming freely in the ocean
playing in the waves and staying away from the shore
I was a tree with heavy branches of green new leaves-
alive in a thick forest, tall and strong, reaching for the sun
I was a sky whose stars shone so brightly with a full moon
my stars would light up in the darkness and shine over seas
I was an island, small with shores where people would laugh and play
visitors admired my rugged cliffs and lush green fields,
I was a brightly covered gift holding treasures within-delightful
my contents gleamed waiting to be unwrapped.
I was these and many things until you left-now I am no more.

At One With Nature

I stood alone upon a hill
whilst all around was quiet and still
I watched as birds flew from tree to tree
and envied how they are so free
I sat alone to ponder life
imagined me as some man's wife
as branches played in a gentle breeze
and envied the freedom of the trees
I lay alone on a bed of fallen leaves
taking shade under the canopies
hearing creatures scurry here and there
and envied their life so free of care
I wandered home alone in a daze
enjoying the last of summer's rays
I watched as day turned into night
and envied the owl her evening flight.

Do Not

Do not feel sorrow at my demise
as winter sleeps and the willow cries
look forward to the coming days,
know I loved you in so many ways.

Do not feel your heart grow heavy,
while summer sun makes others merry
look with hope to the coming years,
Know I loved you -dry up those tears.

Do not sit and weep no longer,
everyday you must grow stronger
recall me as the blackbird sings in spring,
Know I loved you for so many things.

Do not sit at my lonely grave,
find another heart to love and be brave
make haste for you should not wait,
Know I loved you- but now it is too late.

Dementia

She sits before the open window
a slight breeze not enough to cool her
watching as the curtains stir
she thinks they are speaking
words that she can't quiet hear
memories come and go-mainly of long ago
yesterday, that was just another day
already forgotten
her eyes close and faces appear
of whom she cannot recall
a smile plays on her lips-briefly
it disappears and she looks pained
she hears rumblings- her empty stomach?
or was it coming from the darkening sky?
an empty plate she saw it as it sat on the table
fear creeps in, what is my name?
why am I here alone?
she asks the empty room
but it does not answer.

A New Day

Morning, a dawn chorus rouses me from my slumber
bird song intensifies with the rising of the sun,
and with its ascension, a world awakens to a new day.

A day filled with promise, hope and newness,
how can I but smile and rise with optimism and dreams,
a world alive with sounds inviting me to enjoy this vision.

My steps light, that of a much younger me-inspired,
dew still lingers, birds still sing, and a sun shines in glory,
time, there is no time to waste, a day is but a day.

But, all too soon, descending notes give rise to dusk,
a moon awaits it's turn, all must end, all must close,
Yet, I am thankful for this day, for tomorrow and all my yesterdays.

Summer Days

I loved the days when I was young and free
eating sand in my food as I sat by the sea
the sounds of the ocean waves
exploring in those cliff face caves
the days were long and hot and sticky
happy times shared with my friend Micky
ice-creams melting dripping down our arms
seaside shops selling rocks shells and charms
buckets and spades and a packed picnic hamper
for fear of rain we'd take us a jumper
paddling close to shore-afraid to swim
sometimes my dad would throw us both in
the long journey home endured in dad's car
good old dad- the man was a star
coastal days in my memory cling
how we would laugh, dance and sing
now sitting in my office all hot and sticky
thoughts of my youth and old mate Micky
the weekend is coming-it's just round the corner
I'll meet up with Micky if the weather stays warmer
