I Am
I am like a bird whose wings have broken and cannot fly-damaged,
fluttering hopelessly on the ground seeking the sky
I am like a whale who swam too close the shore, stranded
thrashing about in the waves yearning for the open sea
I am like a tree who bares no leaves as I sway in the breeze-
standing tall in the rich soil, yet diseased and dying
I am like a sky without moon and stars to light me-dark
waiting like a fire that has turned to ash
I am like an island that has been consumed by the sea-forever lost-
once people roamed about me and played on my shore
I am like the gift wrapped in gold with promises of riches-fake
my bows and paper a delightful sight- with nothing inside.
I was a flock of geese flying high -wild and free
soaring above fields of green- over the sea to distant lands
I was a graceful whale swimming freely in the ocean
playing in the waves and staying away from the shore
I was a tree with heavy branches of green new leaves-
alive in a thick forest, tall and strong, reaching for the sun
I was a sky whose stars shone so brightly with a full moon
my stars would light up in the darkness and shine over seas
I was an island, small with shores where people would laugh and play
visitors admired my rugged cliffs and lush green fields,
I was a brightly covered gift holding treasures within-delightful
my contents gleamed waiting to be unwrapped.
I was these and many things until you left-now I am no more.
