Backyard

BACKYARD
Quazi Johirul Islam

Backyard birch has bloomed a green umbrella
Two white doves peeping from mid branch above
Gray squirrel searches land to seedling love
A red handkerchief spoils the glabella.
Bullnose stones offered her cold and hard lap
Wind strokes the lush hair of mid-august-land
Golden finch flew, fallen feathers will stand.
Someone walks, wood diverged creating gap.

The falling sun kisses the floating dust
Between the patio-bricks smiles green moss
To uproot them lady draws cruel cross
Old man watches wash, and his anger burst
Three-years granddaughter appeared from sunset
She walks and falls, runs again, ignores threat.

Snare

SNARE
By Quazi Johirul Islam

I am back to New York after four days
She embraced me with her wide opened arms
Offered love but I don’t find the old charms
I’m back, in an unknown place no one stays.
Someone must have raped my beloved town
Scars are palpable on her subtle face
I'm shocked who took away the green-glace
She is pale and her esteem is so down.

I have found upside down gold-finch-body
Holding sky by her dried and tinny feet
No one else but the death has offered greet
Precious one became now cheap and shoddy.
Chilly air whispers death now everywhere
Evil vibe in the dark I feel the snare.

Old Nails

OLD NAILS
Quazi Johirul Islam

I have been trying to remove old nails
From my feet, from my palms, for many years
Jordan full to the brim of my pure tears
Pain spread all over with the great details.
Bethlehem-sky broken down to Sinai
Torment of Sinai melted the mountain
Golgotha-sin washed away by the rain
People climbed further up, up very high.

My body is still nailed to the old cross
Dripping blood, flows to every dark ocean
Who knows the world standing on a question?
Someone spreading fear with his shinny tawse.
You nailed me to ground and ask me to walk
Even I give a try, there is nighthawk?

Thanksgiving Day

Strong southern wind.

She is thankful for the golden leaves,
The gray squirrel preparing for the winter,
Picking up dried leaves from the top boughs
Dancing with shattered sun on the oak bole
She is thankful for the tree-hole, the gift of oak
She is thankful for the strong and cool wind
That has taken away the chlorophyll of leaves
She is thankful for the heat of sun,
That dried up leaves for her winter home,
A refuge for a long hibernation.

SUGAR-DADDY

SUGAR-DADDY
BY QUAZI JOHIRUL ISLAM

On the subway a white sugar-daddy
Whispers to a brown girl, you stay with me
I will pay your rent and bills, tuition fee
Don’t be a fool, to my bid, disagree.
I promise will take you to Broadway show
Full of joy and with happiness you'll grow
Cloud in her eyes, the river roars to be
Broken; uncertainty suddenly has
Found a piece of wood is floating on the
High tide; a new dream, she hears tune of jazz!
Life splashes on the high-end backyard pool
Did she jump on pool of joy or fire?
Immigrant girl doesn’t want to be fool
She touched the dream to let the qualm retire.

SCAFFOLD DISAPPEARED

Quazi Johirul Islam
SCAFFOLD DISAPPEARED

Scaffold disappeared, and it was a different morning
Sunlight has never threatened me ever like that
I can imagine how terrible winter is awaiting
while the sun is not a good friend.

Wind drops without an obstacle, cold and hard
I can easily see him standing a little future away
In an empty sand field wounded and bloody.

A Slug in your brain

Summer here
in this year is too hot
I need an empty lot
covered by
green moss and shrubs
A gentle breeze
affectionately shaking leaves
and...

and you, the earth
open the door of love
and let me in
within...

me, a glowing myrth, the lovely slug,
plug me in,
the soft soil, the beautiful girl,
the inevitable woman,
the mother,
the wife,
the sister,
the one and the only receiver of pain

let me have a deep sleep
in your brain

It is too hot here, this summer.

POEM

1.
Invisible but not absent
Saunter along with you
Get wind of me
		Between the words
The train runs on two tracks
Everyone sees…
But no one sees
What in there moving along
Betwixt the lines

Discern while everything sinks in dark
Feel the presence conspicuously

Endure the light.

2.
Your letter was a great story
But the closed envelope was the poem.
