Gallipoli

GALLIPOLI

From the Snowy River March, they came
So young and free and wild
Someone’s brother…father…nephew
Or a mothers only child

The call was made and the lads rallied round
As they vowed to fight for love of country
On the shores of this foreign land
And as they left the comfort of their homes
For their voyage across the sea
Little expectations had these boys
Of what they would encounter on the sands of Gallipoli

Blessed were the living that had fought their way ashore
Amidst the hail of bullets and gunfire
And the sickening sound of agony
As through flesh this horror tore

To make it to the trenches
was more than the mind could bear
to see the sight of bloodied, twisted bodies
that writhed in agony and despair
nothing had prepared these boys
for the sight they did behold
the stench of wounded bodies
and the damp and rain and cold

for those that made it home
to a warm and loving embrace
was of little consolation
to the mates that gave their lives
on the now silent blood-soaked shores
of this forsaken foreign place

The Pub Call

You`re off to the pub to see your mates
The beers cold and wet...and flows like the tide
And the first six schooners don’t touch the sides

Then you feel a warmth just start to creep
And throughout your body it begins to seep
Then you get that well-worn plastered smile
That stunned mullet look across your dial

But you continue on...well you’re not sure why
It’s the thing you do...cause you’re a guy
Then you need to “go” and you map out the track
And its two steps forward and ten steps back

Of course, you know the way...you’ve been there before
Still...you just can’t find that bloody door!
And you’re swaying there...while your eyeballs float
Cause you think someone’s moved the door that says “BLOKES”

But of course, that’s not true, it’s your eyes that are blurred
And you can’t ask directions...cause your speech is too slurred
Hey, but you manage to find the way back to the bar
But you’re denied that “roadie” ...as you’ve filled your quota

So, you’re outa there now...but you still need that “pee”
You’ve lost all direction, but still find a tree
And with trousers round ankles...you grin like a gnome
As you pee in the front yard of somebody’s home

Then you continue on...well by now you need “bed”
But that’s not to be...it’s a garden hedge instead
And when you awake with the mornings first light
You wander off home...once you’ve focused your sights

But your head pounds a beat...and the body’s in pain
And you tell yourself you won’t do this again
Though you know that’s not true...you’ve said it before
One call from the boys...and you’ll fly out the door

Secret Garden

Amidst the brilliant colours, of this garden hidden away
Dwell the beings of childhood fantasies that dance and frolic and play
Where ladybirds nestle contently on a carpet of brilliant green
And the colours of the rainbow, on snail shells can be seen
Where the butterflies are purple and green and yellow and blue
With the tiniest of insects found bathed in colour too
And in the corner of the garden... In a quiet little spot
Stands a tiny little mushroom...not much more than a dot
But if you look upon this dot so very carefully
Can you see the tiny wings fluttering so busily?
It’s a magical little being...a fairy...hovering in flight
As sun reflects off tiny wing it bathes in nature`s light
And can you see the flowers...dancing with such glee
As they talk amongst each other, content and wild and free
And listen as the tiny creek giggles and flows with delight
As creatures come to drink their fill, or bathe or seek respite
And if you care to stay a while...be quiet and still if you please
Perhaps you`ll even hear the wind...as it sighs on gentle breeze

The Campfire

THE CAMPFIRE

Throughout all the worlds in days of olde
Around the campfire legends were told
From the sinking of galleons in various seas
That were laden with treasure and un found for years
To the Dutchman’s reef through word is told
Believed to be illusive and full of gold
Where many have searched and looked to gain
But perished through hardship in the unforgiving terrain

And through the flickering flames that danced at night
Captured was the soul in sheer delight
And the worries of the world were solved by some
Through the bottom of a tankard once filled with rum
And bathed in warmth from heat and ale
Stories became legend amidst myth and tale

wrapped in warmth against the cold
Around the camp fire these tales are told
Of bravery and deeds renown
And ghostly beings that roamed faraway towns
Like the ghost that sat at Fisherman’s Bend
Pointing to the creek where his life did end

Around the campfire bathed in warmth and light
All manner of tales are shared through the night

Unwind

UNWIND
Against the twilight so quietly
Sat this grand old lady of the sea
Her lines and curves still full of grace
She bobbed so silently in her place

Many repairs were guessed at hand
Once gotten out upon dry land

The trip from ramp to yard was slow
She creaked and moaned and groaned tis so
And once in the yard looked unloved and forlorn
The decks, the roof and the covers...all rotting and torn

And the heart of this dame once running at will
Her engines sat rusty...and silent...and still

But with screws and nails and paint and such
Was restored to her glory with a loving touch
With sweat on brow and laboured hands
This sad old lady would yet again be grand

So, as it was then...can it once again be
This grand old dame back out at sea

A Shelter Dog

A SHELTER DOG
Four walls I see… a concrete floor
Life I once loved …I have no more
My eyes grow dim and my furs gone grey
In my loneliness I sit each day
Some bark and yelp…and some do cry
As others simply wait to die
I am a shelter dog

My sadness overwhelms me so
Such despair and heartache I’d never before known
Some people come... .and stop... ...and look at me
But pass me by …... as too old I be
Each day feels like an eternity
I am a shelter dog

I want to shout ... and jump... and say
Please don’t pass me by today
Stop a moment… and ruffle my ears
And feel the heartache of a million tears
I still have so much love to give
I do so desperately want to live
I am a shelter dog
