A Shelter Dog

A SHELTER DOG Four walls I see… a concrete floor Life I once loved …I have no more My eyes grow dim and my furs gone grey In my loneliness I sit each day Some bark and yelp…and some do cry As others simply wait to die I am a shelter dog My sadness overwhelms me so Such despair and heartache I’d never before known Some people come... .and stop... ...and look at me But pass me by …... as too old I be Each day feels like an eternity I am a shelter dog I want to shout ... and jump... and say Please don’t pass me by today Stop a moment… and ruffle my ears And feel the heartache of a million tears I still have so much love to give I do so desperately want to live I am a shelter dog

Ingrid, I have rescued 19 dogs from the shelter. I have found homes for them all after keeping them for a number of years, but when I moved I had to re-home them. A shelter is such a horrible place for a dog. Thank you for writing this one. I enjoyed your empathy and personification. It is so sad!
