You Are Who You Are

You Are Who You Are
(Dedicated to all students in Brunei)

You are who you are- a unique creature.
All men are your brothers but you’re different and rare.
None that came before, none that lives today,
nor one that lives tomorrow would ever be like you.

You are a unique rarity of nature’s creation,
an end product of changes through years of evolution.
So you’re well-equipped in both body and mind,
as any other creatures, emperors and wise men.

Within you burns a flame of discontent,
raging so fiercely for years and generations.
It scorches your spirit, a constant irritation-
an eagerness to be better, as you journey on.

You have unlimited potential that should be put to use,
lest it will rot and die, stagnate and run dry.
You should achieve more, much more than you’ve done,
and not indulge in self-praise for achievement not grand.

Struggle may not be easy, thorns may come your way.
But they’re chances in disguise, hold on ‘till you’re free.
Nature knows no defeat and so should you,
victorious you’ll emerge as you persist and wait.

Into a mountain you’ll grow not shrink into a mound,
by straining your potential until success is found.
Yes, you’ll be the greatest, the greatest of all,
‘cause you’re not born by chance, that’s what
you’re here for.

The Two Winding Roads

The Two Winding Roads
        (Alice Advincula)

Sprawled before us in our life journey,
are two winding roads towards eternity.
One is smooth, brightly lit and broad,
the other one narrow, gloomy and cold.

A great multitude travel the easy road,
dressed elegantly with reaches untold.
In a hubbub of music and mindless laughter,
they journey on and on to a place unknown.

Worldly as they are intoxicated by joy,
no time is wasted to seek material pleasure.
They crave on and on for power and fame,
till they’re slaves of sin, envy and discontent.

Too late to realize the journey is over,
that they have now reached the brink of disaster.
Too late to fathom they have lost their souls,
in exchange for pleasure and meaningless trifles.

Take a look at the other journey,
where few people tread along the narrow way.
Battered and beaten, they go on and on,
their clothes are tattered, worn out and torn.

Suffering to them is just ephemeral,
for they know exactly where they are bound.
They’re just passers-by in this hostile world,
they don’t need to amass treasures and gold.

Eternal happiness is what they long for,
so they are heading to their King and Savior.
Patiently they wait for that glorious day,
when paradise is reached at the end of journey.

Lord, help me choose the right winding road,
your eternal kingdom, allow me to behold.
It may not be easy, Lord empower me
to overcome obstacles that may come my way.

God Reveals His Presence

God Reveals His Presence

The world we live in is full of cares,
With strings of troubles, despair and tears.
Hearts are broken, dreams are shattered,
Nobody is spared, everyone has a share.

Some stumble down but try hard to rise up.
Some totally beaten with nothing more to dream.
Some still plod on but through aimless path.
A meaningless life, bitterness in the heart.

The struggle goes on as the battle rages.
Between good and evil, between life and death.
Man in his weakness, makes the wrong choice,
Takes the wrong path, lured by world pleasures.

He drifts farther away as he wallows in sin.
Won over by darkness God is forgotten.
But God never tires, still searches for him.
With mercy overflowing, ready to forgive him.

God speaks to him through his brokenness.
When inflicted with pain by his wretchedness.
As he cries out for mercy, helpless and beaten,
God reveals Himself, tenderly comforting.

So brother don’t despair, when troubles set in.
God is within you revealing His presence.
It’s His marvelous way of getting you back.
When you wander away from His precious flock.
