Socrates

An eloquent stutterer he was,
whose anecdotes were luscious and true
he lived in the days of aesthetics,
but had no comeliness in size or stature;

His teachings were unadulterated and void of fallacy
Ipso facto he was condemned to the gallows,
he tasted of the legendary hemlock potion
And died before he lived.

My First Love

In earnest, I have tarried,
longing to be wrapped,
in the embrace of your warmth,
that your gracious loins may whisper
to my thoughts the meaning of affection,

And when my time is done,
in the Taj Mahal of your being,
I will be embalmed for an eternity,
While my heart you will find,
for you preserved,
in fountains of wine.

Perpetual

My story begins in a fire, not the fire that burns and chars,
but a cold fire of depression, hotter than the sun beneath the equator

I lingered in limbo, devastated by the events about me
and then she appeared!
her face shone like the midmorning sun upon fields of gold,
her soul beyond the grasp of the fiery flames
should I tell you about her touch? Ah!

she will be my deliverer; my goddess of fortune and bliss,
the mirror of all my thoughts and the keeper of all my hopes
her name... PERPETUAL!

but this is not the real story, as a matter of fact this is not the story at all...

Mother

In reckless abandon my mind trekked,
But I "became", by the ardor in your being
Despite the discomfort,
You preserved me in your pouch
When you could have chosen to wash me away

With great pains and agony you brought me forth,
Can I be ashamed of her that bore me?
One thing remains,
Even now that I am grown,
Your love I have not outgrown.

Kangou

I stood at the edge of exhaustion
quietly sipping my cup of palmwine
when I saw Sabri,
frazzled but unyielding in her soft scrubs,
our eyes locked for a brief moment
In her gaze were buckets of hope
Oh! Bijou of destiny!!
maiden of Pointe-Noire!!!
you ignited the embers

She was going to touch me
but I was jolted from reverie
when Uhuru my noisy neighbour
spilled some palmwine on my face
though upset, I licked the sweetness off my lips
with the composure of a fulfilled nonagenarian
and smiled as I saw once again, the torch of our futures
glittering like fire beneath a kettle
Her name, all carved in flames of gold...Kangou!

The Folly of Pride

Sometimes we fail to see our faults
because of pride and haughty flaws
which tends to shut all friendship doors
even as chanticleer the bird recalls

A certain season with no remorse
he had to act a gross of chores
as a means to heal his sores
he gave his best to best the course

and all went well as a cause
so be jocund and prudent in tours
learn from chanticleer and get no curse
for pride goeth before the falls.

The Bride I Never Had

Sweet lily, second to none in goodness and in grace,
I chose you from the cornucopia of cinnamons in my bouquet
As your streamlined looks keep me sedated
Your tender looks speaks of tales untold
Even "Bacchus'" palm wine cannot match the euphoria of your embrace

Ah! your luscious hips inspire me
And when tomorrow comes, we will wed
Beneath the cloudless climes I will hold you dear
And like the He-goat and cassava, I will treasure you,
For not to have loved you would have been treason against my heart !!!

The Aura of Nature

I picture the serenity of the beautiful waters of Karukera,
as I listen to the sound of the Igarra falls,
with the rugged devotion of a palmwine tapper,
Bordered on the east by hills, and tall trees in the west,

The river appear shallow, but I do not tread to dive in,
Rather, I find solace, drinking Kunu, the rosé of northern Nigeria,
And from such an exalted apotheosis,
I exclaim: "Life is beautiful"

My Teacher

Shall I forget,
He that stooped to see me climb?
Shall I forget,
He who now rests on the arms of eternity?

He was a manly man,
And even as he lieth beneath the grass,
As food for the worms,
I will forget him not,

For he was my Teacher!

...Dearest Mother

Waters will cease,
the land becomes arid
brooks run dry
sycamores will wither away

Men will stumble
heroes will falter,
Legends may fall
But I will in earnest remain,

With a candle in one hand
and a box of pearls in the other
mummuring your name,
In the menacles of affection
