Sing tae me the auld sangs that ah learnt when a bairn,
Sitting at ma mithers knee hearin the lilting tunes,
Carrying me far awa in ma mind
Wurds o the land whaur ah live
An love aw the deys o ma life.
The auld sangs o Caledonia uv heroes ,fermers an unco ithers,
Auld yins wi tales tae tell o plooghmen wi ther hoarses
Running trecks in the fields
Ready fur seed hoping tae grow,
Berley,oats and wheat an aw.
O shepherds an ther dugs so clever an quick,
Chasing the yowes ower hill an glen,
Hardy people wummin an men,
Oot in a wethers hail, rain ur sna,
Lookin fur the yin that’s lost.
Auld sangs bring memories back pintin the wey tae gaw,
Daw we daur tae learn from them wisdom an aw,
Wi a sigh an a tear in oor een,
At the end o the year wi sentiment seen
Auld sangs agin lustily sung.

It’s shearing time again
My husband has to go
Back to the boards again
To make us all some dough.
He walks out the front door
Lets out a quiet moan
And gathers up his cutters
Tool box & his wide combs.
The boss will not accept
Less than 100 sheep today
My husband knows full well
any less won’t be much pay.
He bends down as he starts
he thanks God for the back aid
these young bucks will never know
what it was like in the ol’ days.
It was 20 years ago
He won the comp for the 8 hour
For strongwool ewes & wethers
He was at the peak of his power.
The strength may not be there
For time has moved on now
But he knows the shortcuts
As the sweat drips from his brow.
He walks through the door
Puts the toolbox on the sill
Says to me so proudly
Now you can pay the bills
He may not be so perfect
But to me he is a man
I’ll get him through the next few months
Its shearing time again
Yes, I’ll get him through the next few months
Its shearing time again.
A true story about 2 shearers wives I know but written as one

Though the father of the heathen family is a snob, the mother does blather with others and tethers their cattle with withered leathers whether the weather is warm or not. Neither she loathes any others nor fails to be blithe at the advent of the lithe spring at the southern coast of Southampton where with brotherly affection together run hither and thither sheathers and wethers.

Nature Wakes
Earth turns
Each day dawns anew
Memories enhance views
Time
Inexorably weathers and wethers
Why wonders
When nears
Where changes wanderlust
Satisfaction soothes
Together triumphs
