I know you hear me, wherever you are.
And I know you watch me dancing among the stars
I know that you're afraid to be a part
of who I've become.
It's like when it's the best part of the tape, and you want a rerun..
But the tape's been ripped out of the VCR, and you don't know how,
to put it back together.
When all you want is to sit and watch it forever.
I know you hide in a secret light,
that you save for a rainy day.
I know it's not fair for me to make you wait,
for you to walk this path that's already been paved.
But when I follow you,
I find my way out of the dark.
Perhaps because of the pain and the love
that you hide inside of your heart.
The stuff you don't ever let anyone see,
except when you're dancing
among the stars and the sea.

Christmas is not Christmas without certain shows on my TV
Rudolph and Frosty from the sixties, are two I have to see.
A Christmas Story from the eighties always makes me laugh.
Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase will be included in my raft.
It I get stranded with a TV and a VCR and nothing else to see.
I have to watch how the Grinch Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey.
It is a wonderful life with Jimmy Steward is something I might take.
But If I bring along Will Farrell in Elf, that has to be a mistake.

I need a VCR to expain some things
like
Why they called me an bundle of sticks
or told me to shut the front door in my face.
My first Ladies' fest of course
taught me to follow mom's rose petals
to the soup kitchen
age 11 and we can find my mother together there
Before that it was
"He-She" or "It"
when they called me
any names at all
Purple hair after living overseas
Behind my long hair are tears
I already left Korea a young girl
I didn't see Vietnam yet
Coming home I learn I hate school
and I am alone in my home town
The best frenemies, bullies aren't
any older than me yet
'Go get the strongest fighter
Fiercest I don't know or care!'
Before that
a room beside the class
We hide so close to
The homophobic driver
A survivor of what next
I didn't ever expect
A White room with a tv
above a blank table top
Driver is the game they task
in middle school
if is it real
what do you intend to do?
they ask
attacking us
what's this about?
the dangers of us, or them?
That's Bully for you dear.

I need a vcr
then you will understand
why they called me a fa got
got it not it
or told me to shut the
fck up suck it up
Before that it was
''He 'she 'It''
they called me
'purple hair'
after living overseas
behind me
long hair already
left Korea
didn't see Vietnam yet
wait until we get back to the 'states
Vietnam has estates too you know
burning rubber groves and napalm
on aging palms
Let's go back to
The best frenemies, too
bullies aren't any older
than me yet
go get the strongest fighter
fiercest I dont know or care
before that
a room beside me
we hide so close to
a homophobic driver
video games in
a detention hall
a surviver of what
they know next
I didn't ever want to know
A small white room with a tv
above a blank table top
Driver is the game the kids/ ask
if is it real as my mind thinks
about the adults on fire
in the museum built just for me
an American child talking to another
what do you mean?
they asked me
when it was not
the question of the day
'attacking us'! What's this about
The dangers of us, or them?
I'm no longer in Vietnam, today
2020 is another war another way

Programing a VCR and other terrors
In the old days
I used to dread
the chore
of programing my VCR
just never got the hang
of doing that
the VCR sat there
taunting me
begging me
to do it
to her
but I just never could
learn how to program
that damn machine

There is silver linings in the clouds today
hypnotic breeze makes the trees sway
on the pavement of broken dreams she waits
eighty years old embracing the fates
her treasures of stories have all been told
her body tells her she is way too old
No one comes to hold her hand
No one is left to help her stand
Unsteady steps as she crosses the street
Cars fly by and she refuses to retreat
Her path is determined, no need to fear
she wobbles with purpose, the end is near
Philosophies fumble through her mind
her life plays like a vcr on rewind
no regrets, well maybe a few
but the road is ending, what could she do
crowded streets, life is passing by
rushing to the who knows where and why
I watch and wonder...
Will she make it before the lights change?

First the ride (with kids' CDs)
Then supermarket (mini-cart);
Buying lots of food to please
Then snacks and playground, for a start.
Books and Curious George on tape,
Dinner, Face-Time Mom & Dad;
From routines a great escape.
What a time we all have had!
Baths and bedtime story, then
Hugs and kiss and cozy tuck;
Next some calm for hours when
Our perfect streak has lost its luck.
One child up who needs attention
(Seems it's not an easy fix).
If you see me, please don't mention
Age and lack of sleep don't mix.
Breakfast, music, puzzles, playing;
Happy Birthday Daddy call.
Ride to Music Fest and staying
Long enough for smiles for all.
See the water wheel still turning;
Marvel at the way it works.
Home for lunch with time for learning.
(Smart genetics has its perks.)
Visit friends to see their fishes;
Hit the playground once again.
Back for dinner and some wishes
That I'll have the time to pen.
Winding down with books and bingo
And a VCR cartoon.
Two short bedtime tales, then zingo -
Day is over, none too soon.
For though there has been no blunder
On this weekend on our own,
It's so tiring, I wonder
How we ever raised our own!

in the basement is your first color television
known for its recurring static and bent antenna
and broken VCR
extraterrestrials climb in through the high window
that doesn't open
but they've been here for thousands of years
they were the storks that delivered humans
during the time there was a gap in hominids
between neanderthals and us
they know why the antimatter and matter
don't cancel each other out
they're responsible for the Easter Island rock statues
for the hieroglyphs of machines and aircraft
and suddenly
your color television jolts on
to live news of 1939

Way Back When Lingo! (Slang from the 1970's)
The '70's were way back when,
Once we were young,
the 70's had just begun...
There were hits that were around,
when we were all closer to the ground...
I was a dorky classroom teacher,
Like being a gross lay preacher,
For all the little chicks and dudes,
Who had to sit on it in primary school,
"Get real!" I'd say to them,
They answered back, "Ahem,
Up your nose with a rubber hose!"
When I'd asked them to write some prose.
They were in my face all day,
Can you dig it? Then they'd say,
"Dorky, don't chuck a spaz,
We're really not that bad.
Keep on truckin', Art is groovy!"
Didn't have a VCR for movies.
"Maths is sick!" they'd shriek,
"We're not perfect little geeks!'
"Awe, sooky sooky la la,"
I'd say, "Extra homework, ha ha ha!
Right on, looooking gooood..."
"Dream on, dorky, there's the bell!"
"Good night, John boys!" I'd yell.
"That's sick!" "Catch you tomorrow."
Hometime was no sorrow.
"Catch you on the flip side,"
As they ran outside,
"Don't go bananas at us!!!!"
Now we're old, why did I fuss?
Once we were all so young,
When the '70's had just begun.

The Evil Net
Frank Halliwell
The world is going to the dogs
It's obvious to me,
With drugs and murders everyday
And frequent robbery
No one is safe out on the street
Especially alone,
And obscene calls are often heard
When you pick up the phone!
A man's home was his castle once
Secure and sacrosanct,
But now its just another place,
As unsafe as a bank!
That evil Internet's the cause
I read last Saturday!
I guess they'll have to censor it,
There seems no other way!
I don't know how we'll ever stop
The smut from near and far,
And all that **** that I see nightly
On my VCR.

* for "Halloween Costume" contest sponsored by SKAT*
Oh I've had many wacky costumes through the years
Just to show folks nothing is as it appears!
Once I dressed as a pirate and wore videos
A cable wire necklace and swashbuckler clothes
I was a video pirate and some people guessed
When they saw vcr tapes in my treasure chest
Another time I had antennae and big wings
Dressed like a gypsy with my necklaces and rings
I was a gypsy moth, not many even knew
They'd stare at me and laugh but didn't have a clue
And sorry to say but once I was a pregnant nun
Irreverent,I know, but it was so much fun!
When all else fails and you are kind of in a hurry
Here's a last minute one so you don't have to worry
Put P on a t-shirt,blacken up one eye
You'll be a black-eyed pea,it's good for a stand-by!
I've been a box of Kleenex and a trophy wife
And all the normal, boring things you see in life
But being a creative soul I've tried to be
At Halloween something you don't usually see!

I don't subscribe to cable or satellite TV.
I don't even have those rabbit ears for the channels that are free.
My television viewing habits are strictly VCR or DVD.
Now there's no more commercials shouting at me to buy what I do not need,
but the advertising I could deal with. What would depress the hell out of me
would be the scrolls that would appear at the bottom or the top of the screen on my TV.
I couldn't watch a love story or situation comedy
without those depressing scrolls constantly appearing on the screen of my TV.
...Baby found in dumpster...Woman raped by monster...Stay tuned for news at eleven...
Since I stopped watching public television my TV viewing is now pure heaven.

(This is a fictional poem)
I'm all alone and I feel remorse.
A cheap VCR caused me to get a divorce.
Many people say that was a silly reason for our marriage to end.
I lost the love of my life and I haven't seen her again.
Two years earlier I filmed the birth of our son.
Now I'm all alone because of what I've done.
I decided to save thirty bucks by buying a generic VCR.
She hit me so hard that I'm still seeing stars.
I never made any copies of that tape but now I wish I had.
My cheap VCR ate the tape and my wife sure was mad.
When she saw the ruined cassette, she went ape.
I tried to run but I couldn't escape.
She beat me so hard, I had never seen such abuse.
When she got a hold of me, she turned me every way but loose.
I'll give you some advice so you won't suffer my terrible fate.
When you buy a VCR, don't be a cheapskate.
