land of lost shadows
and unweathered skies
five urban colours
through unflinching eyes
tall distant chimneys
and schoolyards at play
smoke drifting sideways
in stillness each day
sketches on packets
of stained cigarettes
strange brooding faces
and marionettes
people bent walking
with heads looking down
- if lowry was living
he'd have painted my town.

JUBILANT JOY
Joy in each crinkled smile, each twinkling
Upturned wink. Thunderous clouds cheer
“Brave New Year.” The petals of the old
In a year of memories, pressed and worn.
Laughter lights up the lightning sky.
Aurora Borealis in fine Winter clothes
Near the roaring January hearth of snow.
Tantalizing cork rips the unweathered sky.
Jubilant celebration — an unknown destination
Of resolutions and who knows what. A hope
Yearning with great expectations for the aged and youth.

Last winter freezing weather cracked
the stones I had so carefully placed
along the garden path.
This summer Mother fell,
causing a bruised, chipped bone
in her left hand and a broken pelvic bone.
Fresh out of the earth,
unweathered stones respond
to an altered ecosystem.
Too long at work—
88 years in her body,
my mother's bones snapped.
New stones crack,
old bones break.
Stones gather strength
and harden as they age.
Would that bones could do the same.
