Sonia

I so admire Sonia*;
She brings honor to the Court,
Especially when rules of law
Her colleagues try to thwart.

In a blistering dissent, she wrote
This ruling now will bring
So much power to a president,
He might as well be king.

Since the founding of our country,
No one’s been above the law,
Yet 6 justices decided
A new plan they’d like to draw.

Sonia “fears for our democracy,”
She said in her dissent
And for 29 sharp pages,
She explained just what she meant.

Oh, I’m fearful for the future
When a candidate and Court
Can take well-established rules and facts
And twist them to distort.

Sonia, take that hat off. Its plumage doesn’t suit you,
So toss it to the floor. The same goes for the boa.
Accessories are fine, dear, but in this case, less is more.

Sonia, take those rings off. I’d like to keep it simple.
Forget the fancy stuff. Your hands don’t need adornment.
They articulate refinement and are elegant enough.

Sonia, take your dress off. It’s damn near ninety-five outside
And hotter still in here. Relax, un-tense your shoulders
As I undo all these buttons. Let us part with this veneer.

Sonia, take it all off: your bodice and your petticoat,
Your stockings and your shoes. It’s my artistic judgment
That your portrait be commissioned in all natural flesh-tone hues.

To Sonia Sanchez

she speak the truth like
no other I've ever heard
before and she's bad

the sounds of bent words
each poem a jazz song that
lingers in the heart

Will Sonia Play Mario-Vision

The spacious arcane hall of Jane & Neal
has thousands of spinning dazzling lights;
it's Friday night and the murmurous noises
of teens lighten up the air-tight atmosphere,
then the happy music fills it with sonorous voices.
Nobody seems to notice Sonia's gorgeous eyes,
although they show sadness, they look surreal;
but in that lonely corner she looks too austere.
How can they ignore her, and let her think
that in that crowd moving in noisy corridors
there's no sympathy, or even boys who don't wink?
Will Sonia play " Mario " to idle away monotous hours?

A note on the picture # 1: This girl seeks a true friendship, but finds none;
and so she chooses to be invisible, in the same way Sonia seeks friends,
but she's ignored by all in the arcane hall.

Sonia

So I write a poem for a dear friend
On account of many happy days
Not to poke fun or offend
Intended to build up and praise
Angel, your awesomeness has no end!

To Sonia (Lg)

I am your windbreak
Your sea wall
The friendly perimeter of your skin
Such a very important nothing at all
The prize you always want to win

Your bosom maternal
Anchored my dreams for another way
You moored me
When my sea was slipping away
And gave me the memory
That will not cease in death
And all the tension with it
I flourish without my fruit
I blossom
Without the nurturing of root

We both would consider better alternatives
To repeat performances
Except for the certainty ... the superlatives
Of expectation in romances
Dusty in old books
We have no covenant and no demand
You will seize the day
And I will ponder how the thing looks.
