Girl from snowy gulch was wearing hot pink.
I was used to green and red, I could not quite think.
Why did you reach for that color? I asked my other.
My other had no words, as silent as my weird brother.
Hot pink looks great on me! The cartoon girl said.
Look how pretty I am! She was rounded, well-fed.
I look fantastic in this snowsuit, you know that I do!
I keep adding paint until I knew that we were both through.

Better bring your sweater, Mom said.
A snowsuit would be better said my bro.
I cannot help it said corpulent Uncle Ted.
I like my house temperature on freeze or low.

They dress up the baby in a peach snowsuit
Then they hear her farting with her cute little toot
Only the farting gets serious, and the diaper begins to howl.
“We had to change her twice before going outside with cousin Sal”
They tell of the adventure as if it is the best they have ever had.
These are two old maids distantly related to my uncle Ted and Dad.
They tell the story at every family reunion and wedding of course.
Today they told it seventeen times at her wedding, in full force.

When I think about
what it was like
playing in the snow as a kid,
I recall that cold
icy blanket crisp-crunching
beneath my big boots.
Mom would bundle me up
in my immobile snowsuit
as if there were tigers in the snow
ready to attack me.
I looked more like a space man
than a kid.
I had to roll my snowballs
with one hand
until they were gigantic
enough that I could finish
with both hands...
I just couldn’t get my arms together
in that padded suit.
My snowpeople were always taller than me;
someone always had to help me
to put the head on them.
You know, it might’ve
been fun to ride a tiger
through that snow
but we lived in the ‘burbs;
no tigers
just lots of white fluff.
It sure would’ve been great
to have tigers hitched to my sled,
pulling me up that long hill.
They could’ve run and played
while I rode back down.
I wonder if Santa Claus
ever considered
how much faster
his sleigh could go
with tigers?
Although,
I suppose if
he has to go down chimneys,
flying reindeer
are more practical.

My fondest memory as a wee one
A photo of me in my snowsuit, cute as a bunny
Maybe I was three
In my mind still can see
A wee tike, the day was Tuesday and sunny

Frozen stiff like a cement gargoyle
Unthawed and unreceptive
The stoic man turned a cold heart toward the throng
Determined to hold onto his bitter outlook
Closing his heart off
Pretending to be inhumane
A grimace on his face
A cherub wearing a pink snowsuit
Was not fooled by the man’s narrow mouth
She pushed her way to his feet
He looked down and saw the circle of white fur
Circling her face
She put up her arms
“Grandpa!”
This melted every bit of his façade.
He reached down and pulled her up
There was a collective gasp by the throng
No one had seen his humanness before.
Now that they had they would never forget

My memory allows me at this very late stage
To still recall a picture of me at 4 years of age
In my hooded brown snowsuit
Front walk looking cute
Destined for stardom, earning a dirty big wage
