Long Life of Tortoise
lions in the forest
are roaring loudly
tortoises look at
skelton of lions generationally.

Having Tortoise Family To Tea
We invited the new family to Sunday tea.
Who knew they would all tortoises be?
We pretended it was normal, Gram and me.
They did not reach for a single chocolate chip cookie.
Go out and catch some flies, said Auntie Bea.
They like them fresh and alive with their tea.
The way she knew was funny to little old me.
She used to date an old tortoise, you see....

Cold Day At the Zoo
The ring-tailed lemurs swished their stripes;
The tortoises perambled.
Rhinoceroses munched on hay;
The seals caroused and gamboled.
A winter day with snow on tap
Was perfect for the zoo.
The humans seemed to stay away
So visitors were few.
The cobra swayed from side to side;
The dart frogs were exquisite.
A cold and dismal afternoon’s
The time I love to visit....

Dreams' Depth
Dream depth
Dreams are the Leatherback tortoises
lazing across the Caribbean’s;
the blue water and columns of sun.
dreams have seen the ruins,
the pieces of lost cities, Atlantis; buried.
Dreams have touched the fossilized white bones
of a father, a fisherman, who sunk.
The boy wakes up, runs on bare feet
towards the shore where his dreams are.

Pet Shop Sale
Hamsters - rats - gerbils - mice
Small in size - small in price
Rabbits - rabbits - everywhere
Get one free - buy a pair
Goldfish - last few - end of line
Cats with a life still of nine
Guinea pigs - once around
One and five - now a pound
Tortoises - terrapins
Reaching shelf life - bargain bins
Budgerigars - going cheap
Parrot - not dead - just asleep
Lizard - still has mighty roar
Very old stock - a dinosaur...

Early Falling Leaves
Autumn is not technically here
But it has arrived nonetheless
With brown crisp maple leaves and their
Imagined conspicuousness.
Each with its own conformation:
Some taking forms of tortoises
As they swirled downward in the sun;
Others twirled like ballerinas
In a sleeping beauty ballet.
Most fell unassumingly down
Nevertheless, quite a display
For a mere poet on the ground
This Monday morning unrehearsed
Depicted in a poets verse....

Symphony
I have dipped my fingers
in the blood of the victim
and asked for the version of the surgeon.
The precocious death?
Do I need another witness?
Who was trapped under the fallen tree?
Only the passer - by was hit
not the bulldozer
which comes from the palace.
After the rain, tortoises will come out,
parrots will be shot down
without any qualms.
Molten lava flows on the thighs.
I come before the symphony and shout:
our homes are burning.

I do not know?
She Sat On The Back Of A Turtle
Note: Tortoises are land-dwelling while turtles are aquatic
She sat on the back of a turtle
then said
" Go Go Go !"
While he
on stumpy feet
trumbled
and humphed
"you are mighty hefty !"
he configured.
She guided him to the water
then said
"Go Go Go"
I know
you want to
what is stopping you?
"You've mistaken me
for a tortoise little girl ! "
She turns around and
leads him to land,
and together they sit
in the sand...
