Happy New Year is a confession; it’s more than a NARRATIVE
It means you are willing to purge yourself of any NEGATIVE
It means that in any circumstance, you will only see POSITIVE
It means when friends disappoint; it wouldn’t seem PUNITIVE
It means you are now optimistic; without taking a PURGATIVE
In 2017, “follow peace with all men”; that’s the new DIRECTIVE

the days all blend together
no pole to which to tether
daylight hours mostly a blur
nighttime now, nothing stirs
purposelessness leads to
hopelessness, on down to
depression, what's more
life's only a theoretical alternative
to death's cathartic purgative
old friends all forget me
relatives keep their distance
they must all be envious
of this hermit's existence

A purgative drug
To cleanse and preserve
The knowledge
And indignation
With which they affront
Agglutinated
The excesses of apartheid!
Come! Behold the scars
That those who angered
Seized- arms outstretched
Their spears flaming!
And you who dither
De-ice your souls
With flames of anger;
And un-reason
Will succumb
To reason!
Hail vanguard
Of our freedom! Hail!
