THE DAISIES
You really have to hand it to the daisies
They dash the lawn like gems on rich brocade
Their sparkle that thus gratifies our gaze is
Cut short each time the reaper wields his blade
Yet in a space of fecund summer days
They raise their heads, resume their snow-white blaze
Hardly any craving is for necessity but rather towards desire
Hardly any desire satisfies but at least it gratifies
Hardly any gratification lasts, only fleeting
Hardly any fleeting brings joy but a flare
Hardly any flare can light or warm but catches the eye
Hardly any eye resists the momentary but soon forgets
Hardly any forgotten is remembered but remains as if never known
