a bit closer.
Been waiting for it,
this day trip to the beach.
Waves lapping at my ankles
sooth me with their repetition.
The Sun allows me to forget stress,
recharge my batteries, and keep going.
It's such a small death,
This being worn down
By inches, by cuts
Bleeding the wallet
Dry, to feed the thirst
The Legion of bills
Bring to the door,
Insatiate
Thirst for money.
The bills come
Money goes
More arrive.
Sighs, rage.
Balance:
Null.
They police the cloth,
the music, the ride,
measuring freedom
by inches of fabric
and silence of streets.
But ideas slip past checkpoints,
songs travel without permits,
and youth dreams louder
than any decree.
For no rule can chain
the restless rhythm of people
who know that tomorrow
must be wider than yesterday.
And freedom, like wind,
cannot be banned.
Rock my cradle,
Sing me a lullaby,
Feed me at your breasts,
Love me soft and true,
Bring me up by inches,
To strong full manhood,
Listen to my cries,
As I struggle with the world,
Lift me up as I stumble and fall,
Help me along,
Till you will or can,
I can now see,
That you stoop low,
With sagging breasts,
Affection all dried,
And almost all set,
To see you buried in bedrock.
