flies out sunning
stunning spring weather... cold kills
feed garden wildlife
warm... freezing cold
resilient are daffodils
built-in antifreeze...
koi still not feeding
hiding frog surprises all
a puffed up Robin
northeast... grey clouds race
trees braced ready to refrain
dark sky's stunting growth
lilac... green buds teased
horse-chestnut... brown buds... tacky
fickle is the spring
hark... dusk... blackbird sings
no challenge it sings alone
sparrows twitter praise
April frightened...
there is no escaping rain
fruit trees flayed... failing
summer joys... confused
wondering will they return
snow belies danger
the park lake silent
local residents dying
where are all the flies
redwings blackbirds strip
yew trees naked no berries
grey squirrels digging

A parliament of owls listens to
The bellowing of bullfinches
And the chattering of choughs
At a wake of buzzards
Resulting from a murder of crows
Witnessed by a watch of nightingales
Assemble a crowd of redwings
In a congregation of magpies
Perch a charm of finches
As a squabble of seagulls
Causes a murmuration of starlings
To startle a piteousness of doves
Amid an exaltation and ascension of larks
And a convocation of eagles
A host of sparrows
Gobbles a diet of worms

Dolichonyx Oryzivorus
spiritus lapsae
Spring has come.
Redwings in marshes,
declaring ownership of
reeds!
Rice Birds!
Dolichonyx Oryzivorus!
Bobolinks!
Redwing cousins,
hopping in the yard;
more up than along!
Long thinking, along;
maybe I'm wrong?
Bobolink singing,
more up than along!

As Yet Unblemished By Pure Beauty
That time has come in nature’s year;
That best time of all, the barren time;
That time of nothing yet but promise;
That time of the pure hope:
Late February,
unblemished by Spring’s harsh actualization,
her first hints in this time of new light,
Skunk Cabbage stirring in frozen swamps
and Redwings in marshes,
her Promise soon to be kept in perfect beauty
unbearably aching with the certainty of loss.
