That Was Then, This Is Now

I love hearing stories,
stories from my grandparents.
They love to tell stories,
stories from many years ago.
Grandma tells about bread,
when black showed up they would cut if off.
Then to the toaster it would go,
or peanut butter with jelly to be smeared on.
Grandpa tells about cottage cheese,
and how it would wear a green coat of fur.
He said when this would happen,
the cottage cheese needed to be thrown out.
Grandpa tells about cheese,
and how it would wear a blue coat of fur.
He said they would cut the blue coat of fur off,
then the cheese was ready for his sandwich.
Now we have bar codes on everything,
from food to toothpaste to medicines.
Now if out of date,
one must throw it out.
I asked my grandparents,
how did you survive?
They said,
common sense my child.
