Play on Words

English words that end in “let”
are called diminutives – did you forget?
All were once of larger size
but were easily diminutized
by the suffix “let” appended
where the word naturally ended.
(Think of it like a tail tacked
to a dog’s rear where one lacked.)
Among their numbers are many
which you probably use daily –
like bracelet, skillet and coverlet;
and if, like me, you happen to be
inclined to anything literary,
there’s rivulet, flamelet, couplet.
One diminutive there is as yet
still denied its official “let”
so I’m recommending it – toil.
And, of course, who can forget
the one you daily use, I bet,
by which I mean the toilet.
