Raining in summer - square dance

In mid-'60s days, when weather was our guide,
Our square dance group would gather as dusk fell,
On university terrace, side by side,
With partners lined, we moved in joyful spell.

Do-si-do, we twirled with hearts alight,
Wave to partners, laughter filled the air,
Till evening rain began its soft descent,
A welcome shower, a summer heat repair.

At first, we danced beneath the gentle drops,
Embracing rain, a cool and sweet reprieve,
But thunder’s clap then made our footsteps stop,
The caller’s voice urged us to take our leave.

“Shelter now,” he said, “with partners near,
Have ice cream, cold drinks in the café's glow,”
We chatted, watched as skies began to clear,
Then sun returned to set the scene aglow.

Men in boots and western hats gave cheer,
Women twirled their skirts with playful flair,
“Bow to partners!” voices rang sincere,
We danced again, beneath the summer air.

The rain had paused our joy but just a beat,
In every step, our hearts resumed their heat.
