I RAN
I ran not out of fright,
I ran not because I was chased.
I ran not because I felt compelled,
Nor from some urging to flee from something or someone.
I ran not because others did,
I ran not because I'm an idealist at heart.
I ran not because of a burden in history,
Nor for a mission that beckoned me forth.
I ran not for an impressive vision,
I ran not from a moral imperative.
I ran not out of need or want,
I ran not for the sake of competing.
I ran not in hopes of being the best,
Not for fame or to be seen.
I ran not to impress,
I ran not for life—
I ran because I could.
