Burning Faith

Burning Faith

While looking in the mirror
Is disappointment, judgement,
Or worse, disgust staring back?

What judges from behind our eyes?
What words come to mind?
Our words, or the failings of others?

How is it that we learn
To judge ourselves so harshly?
Become our own enemy?

Better yet, how do we discern,
Then dismiss, harmful lessons
Taught us by well-meaning others?

Some lessons can be useful still.
Others hold us hostage.
Can we discard what no longer serves?

To forge our own path…
Gone the fears and disillusionments
Adopted from fear-filled mentors.

Though often hidden from us,
Each of us is a star in a brilliant galaxy.
Search for your fire, learn to live it.

And, can we forgive ourselves? Them?
They intended no harm, yet did so.
They taught what they had learned.

Forgiveness might free us
Who have been living their errors.
We are not mules for their flaws.

We may be haunted along our way
By specters of doubt masking the path
As we search to recover ourselves.

Burning faith in our pilgrimage
Answers questions, exposes our truths.
As we embrace our own horizons.
