Joyeux Anniversaire

Extinguish the candles of another year, thirty three,
By le Bateau-Lavoir, copped in contemplation,
Of abstraction at le Musée de l'Orangerie,
Joan Mitchell to Monet, why male comparison?
No, that sentiment doesn't sit at all right with me.

You led me to the work of Suzanne Valadon,
There on that historic hill, summer's air so vain,
Aspiring life Bohemia, before drinks by la Sorbonne,
Terrace of intellect scented in sweat and Gitanes,
Ma robe à fleurs, so Parisienne, très bonne!

This day of June, more beautiful to me than most,
Pregnant with the city's art and antiquity,
I felt inspired to write a line in boast,
Through the back streets of Paris I finally see...
My existential inquiry has found a beguiling host.
