Palinode

A poet’s journey as goes on
A winding wobbly road
That hath many ups and downs known,
To me it scarce sounds odd
Were he to see dusk with the dawn,
And pens a Palinode.

Comes old age and comes a child’s mirth
That tastes arrays of wine,
And treads on a wide swathe of earth,
Acquires vast tastes so fine,
Each in its own right all so worth,
And pens a pied odd line…

On themes that would refuse to wait
On what he thought and saw
And fancied at that given date,
Somewhat ripe, somewhat raw,
That nigh sooner but seldom late
Might no longer him awe.

Now, what’s penned, a product of heart,
Is said by thinking head,
And produced as poetic art,
Tends to wart when time’s sped,
Either a whole or just in part,
Things stuck are good as dead.

Show me a pen who’s not changed mind,
Who writes his thoughts on stone,
And never once need to change find,
Brain an ossified bone,
Ergo, I get e’er more inclined:
Pens are palinode prone.

Poet’s note: A Palinode is an Ode or song recanting or retracting on something said earlier (Greek: palinoidia= back/again, and aeidein= to sing). It was Ogden Nash who once wrote:
Candy
Is dandy,
But liquor
Is quicker.
But he later added in what can be called a Palinode:
But makes me sicker.
A Palinode can be either treated as a kind of Ode, or classified as a poem type: Palinode.
