The Mother I Wish I Had

The mother I wish I had
Has soft and caring hands
She’s dedicated to her goals
And accept me as I am
At the beginning of the day she helps me with my hair
Tells me that I am beautiful
Just the way I am
The mother I wish I had
Goes out shopping with me
We drive and get milkshakes together
But for me, it’s only ever been a fantasy
The mother I wish I had
Stands up for others
She doesn’t let herself get walked over
And never backs down
When we walk into a room together
We’re told how much we look alike
Beautiful mother, beautiful daughter
Lovely all the same
The mother I wish I had
Doesn’t exist for me
By blood I’ve been abandoned
Never again to see
Blood may be thicker than water
But water cleanses my wounds
So thank you to the women
Who have been the mother I wish I had, to me
