The Card

It was just a card, a simple, silly card
he probably got it from the dollar store.
But the words of the card brought tears to her eyes
when he read to her what it said.

She'd been feeling, lately, so blue all the time,
what she wore, what she said, what she did
just didn't matter to her anymore
she was stuck on a blank page of life.

Her clothes were all wrong. Her hair didn't fit.
Why in hell did she paint her nails blue?
She thought things were funny. Her friends didn't laugh.
She just couldn't fit in at all!

Then he gave her that card, that silly card,
there were penguins in a circle on the snow
and in the center a lone little penguin, goofy smile on its face,
wore a necklace of shiny Christmas lights, an ornament on its head.

She couldn't help smiling at that goofy little penguin,
"That's me", she thought, "That's me".
It was when he read the greeting inside that her tears began to flow
for the words rang out so loud and clear and sang to her hurting heart.

He read, "There's you, and then, there's everybody else"
"There's you, and then, there's everybody else"

She cried with joy as she understood he meant those words for her.
He knew her, he loved her, he believed in her still,
No need to fit anywhere.
There's her, but then there is him.
