SHIVERING

I can’t remember when I last shivered.
Must be just over five decades ago
when we lived in a house with one coal fire.
Draughts galore came from each window and door.
Our cold house on top of a windswept hill.
No double glazing or central heating.
No insulation in the loft or walls.

But this is how it was in wintertime.
We just accepted it and made no fuss.
Perhaps it was a good thing for our health
as our bodies were forced to face extremes
just like other creatures in wintertime.
I can’t remember when I last shivered.
