A Playground of Cobwebs

forgotten by time
a playground of cobwebs
thousands of footprints
I made in the sand
              a lifetime ago
once so alive
with activity and merriment
 now a deserted place
haunted by lingering ghosts
the silence, deafening
reverberating e c h o e s
of laughter and noise
by neighborhood children
forever lie deep asleep
what happened
to all the roughhousing noise?
days of innocence
long gone
            this place
I remember so well
 isn't what it used to be;
signs of neglect
everywhere.
I walk through
playground of cobwebs...
what happened
to all the noise?
where is everybody?
a shout
into the void
returns not so much as...
a faint echo.
