New Year's Abecedarian

After the midnight countdown chorus,
Bubbly pops and spills on floor,
Characterising how life is for us:
Depicting wastrels at the core.

Even with high profile charity
Folly remains preferred mode:
Gainsaying, with verve, deserved parity
His Love amongst the needy sowed.

Insensitive, most of us will dine,
Joking through poignant appeals:
Kicking back with a lamb roast and some wine;
Lapping cream as some child’s sores beal.

Maybe this year we’ll be more aware:
Nod to homeless in the street;
Or perhaps even pretend that we care:
Pretend we don’t think they’re all cheats;

Queering the system with their deft ploys.
Recalibration required:
Shift from cynicism to goodwill’s joys
To reclaim hearts which were inspired.

Undo the years of tainted sorrows;
Validate the soul now mocked;
Wash from minds the shallow values
X-box age has thus far imbued.
Yield to He for so long blocked:
Zeitgeist for now and all tomorrows.
