Holbert
Brogans and overalls by Lee;
Making cotton baskets ‘neath a white oak tree.
A grandfather I never really knew
that smoked Prince Albert; it was tried and true.
Went by the name Holbert.
His wallet in his bib; no undershirt.
Sitting in a porch swing he made.
Across his yard the world he surveyed.
Once shotgunned an innocent crane.
Never had he seen such a thing;
Must be some kinda dinosaur.
One shot and it was no more.
Used a jar full of Morgan silver dollars
to buy tires for his ’49 Chevy.
Actions always prove who are the dullards.
No one ever accused him of being heady.
In the middle of the night once shot a stray.
Such dogs often killed our chickens.
Mortally wounded it died under our house
and started to decay.
My job to drag it out as my stomach
started to sicken.
Often to First Monday we would trek.
In his Sunday overalls he was bedecked.
Ripley a good place for selling baskets.
I would always watch to learn his tactics.
Soon old age came to stay.
Early in March he went away.
A lifetime ago it seems,
but often he returns to me
in my dreams.

I hear music in the trees,
filtering down from the sky.
It sounds like Daddy's banjo
serenading Angels on High.
I smell Prince Albert tobacco
as Daddy smokes his pipe....
Rings of smoke twirl around.
as he adjusts the strings just right.
Carving wood for his banjo,
I watched it came alive.
I still wonder about the strings.
The head was from dried cowhide.
My memory was real for a time
but the past just can't stay.
The future stands before me.
I will see him again one day.

I took my periodic stroll through the local antique store today.
I stumbled over things and stepped 'round clutter to make my way.
I looked for clocks, found none, but saw many things I could do without,
And those are the things that I propose to tell you all about.
There was an old buggy wheel - I could see no use for that.
I saw horse collars, washboards and someone's stuffed Angora cat.
On the wall was a photo of a Victorian guy glaring back at me.
Also displayed was a chamber pot and a scraggly Christmas tree!
What use have I for a manure fork or hubcaps for a '47 Dodge,
Or a shaggy buffalo robe or shriveled scalps from an Indian lodge?
Displayed were coffee grinders and old Prince Albert tobacco cans,
A portrait of Napoleon and a hood ornament for a '37 Mercedes Benz!
Hanging on a clothes rack was an old soldier's moth-eaten uniform.
I have no need for a hornet's nest that once held and angry swarm.
Though I found many things I could do without, not so my spouse!
She bought a cart full of gimcracks and trumpery to clutter up the house!

Here's a bit of trivia that you just cannot live without,
But I've looked into this matter and my research leaves little doubt,
That Prince Albert suffers a very serious case of constipation,
Since he's been on the same can for years much to his consternation!

Ok! OK! For the younger crowd - Prince Albert's photo was featured on the Prince Albert Tobacco can for many, many years!

It may come as quite a shock
but Queen Victoria
Loved a curry on a Friday night
liked plenty of sex
and smoked pot.
Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, had 9 children together. Her Indian servant and confidant introduced her to Indian food. Taking drugs and opium were legal in such times.
