wearing
blinders we don't see the big picture clearly
we remain lost in a blinding pogonip
never finding our way out
of its dense, misty blanket
akin to
looking at the world
with jaundiced eyes, especially when the world
is no
clearer than
besmirched lens
keeping us from entertaining
novel ideas, seeing
situations from another perspective
such close-mindedness
does beget cynicism in
the final analysis
a celebration of blissful ignorance
to see things
as they are
we must stay awake and keep our eyes open.

Like a morning hag in curlers
Without a trace of makeup on,
Ugly is thy name, O Desert;
A gift from those who know you not.
Show me the glass-eyed towers
That match your crystalline skies.
Show me the fiery tresses
As fair as your rosy clouds at dawn.
The doyens of cosmetics,
With their scientific skills,
Make no blushes that compare
With your evening skies and hills.
Richer than a thousand gardens
Are your flowered plains in Spring;
Lovelier than the splendid robes
Of wise Solomon, the king.
Fort Knox’ gold is a piker’s hoard
Beside your banks of sun-gilt peaks.
The diamonds of Fifth Avenue
Are dull beside your morning dew.
Your pogonip is a blanket
Much cleaner than the smog.
And who would shun the coyote
For a heavy metal lullaby?

I awoke this morn to a beautiful bitterly cold wintery delight
Shrouded by nights darkness a Pogonip fog crept in to cast its magic spell
Wielded a wintery wand placing a frosty shawl upon all within my sight
Trees branches hung low encased in icy jewels as if an elegant crystal chandelier
While a spider web displaying a frosty garland glistens in the morning light
High above a flight of geese are strung across the sky as if some vocal bandolier
Pogonip did dazzled us with such visual delights but they are not meant to last all day
For a dusty sun has risen through this frosty morning haze
And later today this sun’s rays shining down will melt it all away

Leaves mulch to refresh the podzolic earth.
Cold air stimulates buttercups and crocus bulbs
Children pray for an elusive snow day!
The winter brings in the new year, refreshing life.
Avian migration brings new visitors to the bird feeder.
Warm drinks can be enjoyed...again.

Do the western USA people ever hear the word pogonip?
