The sun is intense this morning
I am wearing my husband’s black sweatshirt
No bra
Just me and the shirt
And my flannel pajama pants
I am not a Neanderthal
If I were younger, I would take off the shirt
Wait
I live in the country
No one comes here
Just a second

I’m in my pajamas.
With stars on my pajama pants.
My pen is on the nightstand.
And paper never lasts.
Everyone is cooking breakfast.
Too many slices of toast.
Bacon is good, but it makes too much noise.
My laptop died.
And then the sun came out.
And told me there is a package on the doorstep.
Something I ordered a few weeks ago.
That I forgot about.
My laptop is charging.
The need to go downstairs is increasing exponentially.
I could go back to bed.
Or fly out the window.
I’m not dreaming, so that’s not an option.
Hovering around the corner of my room.
By my laptop which is charging.
The power went out.
The sun came out, though.
The bacon is halfway cooked.
But the toast is just perfect.
I take a glorious bite.
In pajamas that are almost ready to be washed.
But the power is out.
And I like it that way.

I have peace tonight.
My world is complete.
The great panes of glass
Are frosty with snow
As it silently falls outside.
The night provides a
Perfect crispy black backdrop.
Inside the fire crackles and
Sings it's song.
The orange and red glow
Lights the room
Softly enough to cast shadows
That dance off the wooden walls.
The hot cocoa steams in mugs
On the table,
Releasing a sweet aroma
That reminds me of childhood
Giggles over marshmallows
And chocolate chips.
The true beauty in the room though,
Is you.
Sexy in flannel pajama bottoms.
Broad shoulders stretch a jersey shirt.
Hemingway, of course, in your lap.
When you notice my admiring eyes
A smile forms on perfect lips.
A twinkle in those darling eyes.
For myself it's McCammon.
My toes wiggle under your thighs
To let you know I see that smile,
That knowing look in those eyes.
Alas, our evening is still young.
We haven't enjoyed our cocoa,
Finished reading yet.
And there is more
Winter snow yet to fall.

In my sleepless nights
I toss in bed
Back in forth
It drives me insane
Because I am not able to sleep
Also it is very hot in my bedroom
I can't stand that
I am also sweating like a pig
I am wearing also
My pajama to bed
Yes I already had to drink
Hot milk with honey
To help me fall asleep

My grandkids have Pajama Day
From time to time in school,
So everyone wears PJ’s,
Which the kids find very cool.
I really don’t quite get it, though,
To wake up and to keep
The outfit on that you just wore
All night while fast asleep.
And even if you change into
Fresh PJ’s, I suppose
They can’t be much more comfy
Than most routine school day clothes.
When I was young, Pajama Day
Would’ve made a lot more sense,
For I can cite my skirts and tights
And shoes as evidence.
But outfits worn today by kids -
The leggings and the sweats -
Are just about as comfortable
As clothing ever gets.

I dream of you most nights
The man I will only love,
A man with hair like soft waves,
but the color of a chocolate lab
Freckles scattered like the stars
And sea eyes that hide behind glasses
Oversized Star Wars shirt
Striped pajama pants
Musicals blasting through ear buds
Wind blowing hair out of his face
A paint brush in one hand and a pencil in another
room full of open windows
Comics and posters plastered on the walls
Paint splattered all around
Colors through the hair and glue stuck to the skin

I see you crying in a corner
In your pajama before you sleep
The room becomes warmer
Little by little as you peep.
You wiped your tears and said,
"I too was buried deep",
Then walk towards the bed
"By a promise I was not able to keep".
You stare at yourself in the mirror
Then utter in a hoarse voice
"Now I can see myself clearer
For you already made a choice."
"To acknowledge that I was you
And confront me as a friend
For I am a part you once knew
That would cause your end."
Now I come to recognize
I am the ghost that haunts me;
I see myself right before my eyes
That person is who I used to be.

Today is going to be super easy for some
And yet incredibly difficult for others
Easy because it is the last day before winter break
Which used to be Christmas break, but now can’t be
Many teachers have brought food and are showing movies
The Polar Bear Express, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, etc.
Wait! That has Christmas in it. Maybe not that one.
Not legitimately.
It is also pajama day. The principal hates pajama day.
She has called in sick; I think it is because it is pajama day.
The kids are in the hallway with loud happy voices.
Anticipating their parties and movies.
Some of them will have a tough time today.
They depend on school to be structured.
It is the only structure they receive.
I feel sorry for them; freedom will be difficult for them.

Last night again I tumbled down
Pajama clad and half asleep
Past universes dark and deep
To land transformed
Upon the warmed
And wet volcanic earth.
And there I saw a million souls
Adrift on pools of amber light
Like fairies bathed in candlelight
Without a care
Approaching their
Next reincarnate birth.

Soft feathered-ticking mattress
(Old-fashioned country comfort)
Not found in our local furniture store
At least in my neighborhood anymore
Only rubbery foam-like bedding suits,
Feels like lounging on cardboard
When sound sleep is slow coming
So, yes, I am complaining about it.
Oh, how I miss the pure joy of downy
Fleece on my clean pajama-clad body
Sighing from my daily care
Burrowing into that cave,
Snuggling up, generating my own heat
On a stormy night in dead of winter;
But now, with plastic, no hibernating,
No fond pleasure come nightfall
Sleeping in Grandma's sweet bed
Musing about my childhood years cozy
There in that chilly bedroom with no stove
With lamp on, I could see my steamy breath
While my toes were toasty warm,
Sweet dreams nourishing my soul.

I can do it tomorrow, I think, feeling good in my pajamas.
Isn’t this Monday? My husband asks.
Drat! I thought it was Sunday.
Have I already had two days off?
I look at the clock.
I teach school virtually in three minutes.
“Mrs. K are you wearing your pajamas again?”
I thought it was pajama day, I lie.
I do this every week.
The kids start giving me advice.
They all want to help me.
Why do you put everything off to the last second? My husband asks.
Why don’t you go catch the mouse in my new car? I suggest
We are both the world’s biggest procrastinators.
It is good we found each other
So we do not have to drive anyone else mad
with our “last second, last minute” last chance efforts.
Our children are going to hate us when we die.
Look at all the messes they get to clean, and there are mice here.
Every day we say we are going to call an exterminator.
Every day for the last thirteen years. Have we done it? Not yet.
But we are going to….Our mantra.

In fuzzy pajamas I drink my coffee
Warm and toasty, cozy
In an hour I will be getting dressed
I cringe as cold street clothes hit me
Settle at my computer
To teach virtually
All the children are wearing pajamas
It is pajama day but no one told me?
I am in my warm fuzzies before my next class
Mrs K has on her jammies!
Yes I do and I wear them the rest of the day
Delighting class after class
