Insomnia.
I get up, put on coat
and sit outside in the cool air.
Cloudless night. History hangs overhead
in full stops glowing in an infinite dark.
No wind overwrites the quiet.
There is only the chatter
of my own mind traced in scribbles
across unfolding time. Occasionally
a face forms, lingers then dissolves
into a residue of feelings left
in a forgotten corner of my life.
All is shadow, misted hauntings
in empty rooms.
I reach out for something firm
to hold onto and feel only
my own weight pushed
into the chair. Then, as if breaking
loose, a sudden rush of recognition -
there are people
who love me.

I groped and stumbled through the years and woke up early morning groggy, hurting.? I peeked out the window and saw the sky bright, sun smiling.? I brightened and borrowed a smile and, for once, lit up my face.? My eyes winked like a star in a dark sky; kept smiling through the day.? It tasted nice, radiating light and love.? You can't rewrite the past, nor erase the furrows on the once smooth face.? Overwrite it with the future that has a hope, and meet your desire.? You'll soon retire and count among the past.? I understand that God created us in His image and likeness.? So, borrow from Him.? He doesn't recall our past nor rewrite it; but overwrites it with love--blessing and a future.? So will I!? So do I!? Life's frilled with frown, day and night trail the sun in his course. The sun ever shines, though clouds may dip with a frown!? Ever smilee, though thunder may roll and grumble! Eyes on golden rays at dusk, though storm may howl and splash the sky with dust!? Two constants rule life on earth: light and love.? God's both...? and you, too!

Spring is in its prime again
each leaf beautiful
much is edible
birds and peepers are musical at dawn.
The days walk slowly
toward Utah and Italy.
My left nut hurts.
Joy overwrites death.
Well, well. You're well
alone in your brain
only a negligible fraction
escaping as words and actions.
Every leaf that's coming out
is out. Including the self
to the west and south
a golem, mandragon, an elf.
Aaron was stacking
the last of last year's
firewood. He found
a spotted salamander--
Ambystoma maculatum--
Big mouth--hidden
under the final log
with a worm and centipede for a meal.
I exclaimed Rare species!
but it's common, fossorial
lives in moist woods
under cemetery stones and memorials.
Eats earthworms,
snails, slugs
insect larvae
and adult beetles.

He loved you as a boy,
Now he writes you,
Nature overwrites your coffin,
And that dark funeral lark;
He can express himself endlessly,
According to nature,
and according to all technology.
Even your corpse needs,
By the look on your face there,
Your faith shook you cold,
So now you speak,
But he will tell of your warmth,
Which the fern shall seed,
In church soil damp,
After the funeral.
