The chanting begins before dawn outside
my window to the rainforest, "I'm here!",
"I'm here!" echoes down the valley beside
"Baker!, Baker!", here , there and everywhere.
The morning census has begun. Who did
survive the night? Who does welcome the day?
"Napier, napier!" wants to be counted..
"Zit, zit, zit!" submits with "Three" a long way.
"I told you so, I told you so!", joins the chorus
and affirms the moment. "Argu,argu!"
like pebbles grinding, protests, "Who woke us?"
"Make jou-jou now!, all make jou-jou".
Call and response all day and then, twilight,
and silent expectations of a long night.

I am the liquid in my tears
And the refreshment in my glass of water
I am the song I sing
And the meaning of a poem
I am the place I stand
And I am a helping hand
I am tears of joy
I am joy in grief
I am a dewdrop upon a leaf
I – am – me
