Securing the Gate at Dusk

For a long time, the old barn had quite a lean
It was still shocking when it finally fell.
When you came around the bend
it was comforting to see it
blushing in the sunlight.
It was a great loss when it finally succumbed.
 
If it could speak
would it speak of great sacrifice
or hardship and Goodtimes.
Would it converse with antiques and machinery
or the shadow of a barn cat and a frayed tire swing.

The old farmer had quite a lean just before he past...
don't believe he ever retired. 
He bounced up and down those dusty rows for half a century.
There was a lot of wisdom and a sprinkle of secrets in that lean... 
a quiet ferocity coiled in those ancient-bronzed Mits.

He lived through two world wars and fought in one.
He served- fed and cleaned up the messes of the elite.
He prayed over and buried everything that he loved....
The city slag still called him simple and backwards.
There is something noble about an old farmer
securing his gate at dusk.

Little child, meek and mild,
cherub form, sweetest smile.
Small fingers, tiny toes,
eyes wide in awe-filled glow,
and one cute, button nose.

bear onesie, matching mits.
Oh my babe, tender kin,
my sweet, angelic thing,
with soft hands, velvet skin.

Little child, meek and mild,
so peacefully sleeping.
Golden wisps of hair frame,
such precious innocence,
whom God has called by Name.

Little child, meek and mild,
what joy there is to come.
Rest my child, my child rest.
For soon you'll be grown, and
shall leave my loving nest.

take in
her

smell but
can't tell
is that
her or

where i've
been but
that is
or my

or shall i 
say ours
after so
many

candle melt
downs that
consume
themselves

along
with us
as we follow
the flow of the

flood

The Monkey Trail

We'd leave just after breakfast
play hard all day
there were no cell phones or play dates
we simply gathered up the mates
took off down the monkey trail
ran wild in the thistle fields
chased flyballs on the diamond
collected pop bottles for a nickel a piece
lunch was gulps of warm hose water
a palm filled with stolen plumbs
off again to the train trestle
slinging rocks at muddy beer bottles
flattening pennies on the rails
there were no clocks to tug at our tails.

Sunset was the cue for us to move along
5 speed banana bikes cracking the trail in the half light
mad little monkeys and scratching at our minds
armed with leather mits and Louisville slugger bats
but the ogres and perverts never dare touch us
we were trail toughened little bucks
the warm hose water didn't kill 
we were dirty little dust devils
on a streak of good luck
