Born the daughter of a Lemhi Shoshone chief
she was captured by the Hidatsa in her teens.
And sold to the Mandan Missouri River tribe
where she met and married Toussaint Charbonneau.
A French Canadian trapper and a trail guide
Charbonneau was familiar with the region.
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark spent a
winter with the Mandan waiting for the spring thaw.
Toussaint and Sacagawea were hired as their guides
and in 1805 they set out to explore the wilderness.
While on the trail she gave birth to her son Pompey
and strapping him to a cradle-board they trudged on.
A strong woman and a gifted interpreter
known for her perseverance and resourcefulness.
Bird Woman helped to persuade many native tribes
of the peaceful intent of the expedition.
Once a canoe capsized jeopardizing all of
their valuable possessions and journal entries.
Yet she saved the logbooks of this epic journey
including the navigational charts and maps.
A legendary figure in history she
was indispensable to Lewis and Clark’s trek.
And today She’s honored on a golden dollar
a rare coin issued by the United States Mint.

Amelia,
writer, reader, shower singer, kitchen dancer,
Sister of James,
Lover of family, friends, and a badly-named boy,
who feels the weight of the world, love, pain,
who fears bones, secrets, fights
Would like to see a published book of mine, my friend's next reply, Hokkaido
Resident of Gifu, Japan,
Marie
friend, fearful, prideful, alone,
Sister of Meriwether (she's a girl, fyi)
Lover of books, music, art, my classes (all three of them)
Who feels the pain of the night, the bite of the wind and rain, the darkness of the heart, and the hatred that no one can see
Who fears her dark, dark heart, the things I cannot see, the things I don't hear, romantic love,
Would like to see mountains beneath my skis, wind in my sails, and courage in my heart
Resident of Seville, Ohio, USA

*Note: Meriwether can be both a boys' and girls' name, famous example are the fairy in Sleeping Beauty (blue, I think) and Meriwether Lewis (he explored the western US with Sacajawea). I modded the poem slightly from the original form, using my middle name to link the two poems. X)

They were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark,
Her name was Sacagawea.
On an expedition they did embark
Finding the passage to the sea.
Down the Missouri they traveled,
Then slithered 'round the Snake River bend.
Rocky Mountain weather and sickness battled;
At the Columbia River they'd end.

Somewhere, a Blue Flax cluster blooms.
Their beauty lasts but for a day
Then die in the sun unobserved.
Someplace, an old man lies dying
Alone in the dark with no one
To comfort and pray at his side.
Oftentimes I amble in fields
Searching for this blue wildflower;
And like Meriwether Lewis
I on occasion find the plant;
When I do, I quickly bundle
A large bouquet and head for home.
This time they are for my neighbor:
A man of eighty in poor health.
“Morning neighbor, have you a vase?”
