the blue haired girl has a heart for chickens said the owl.
His wife came out and said “her name is Mrs. McDowell.”
Surprised, Mrs. McDowell looked up from her chicken herd.
But the owls were silent now, refusing to say one more word.

Mrs. McDowell went nuts on Tuesday last.
She did some crazy things, which was a blast.
To us neighbors, who ran over to look.
First she tore pages out of an encyclopedia book.
Then she launched herself off the kitchen sink.
Her husband was embarrassed. His cheeks turned pink.
She’s getting ready to jump off the ironing board now.
We all gathered to watch. Someone yelled out “wow!”
Mrs. McDowell put on quite a show that night.
We still talk about it, and we laugh at her husband’s fright.
Terrified, he finally packed up and walked out the door.
Now she does not have to put up with the slob any more.

After the carols and the pageant
of the birth, we walk through the night
of Lexington to Suzanne and Fran’s.
The streets are darker since a giant
oak gave up the ghost and downed the lights.
The colored bulbs at the Phi Gams’,
still burning, though the brothers went
a week ago, wouldn’t guide us back except
we already know the necessary turns
and window candles on McDowell
cast their welcoming glow into the night.
Then, as Enid taught us, we hold hands
and from our circle of Quaker grace
send silent wishes from our inner light
to all our friends beyond this place

Sewing machine, long idle, gathered dust
Its turn-of-the-century frame clad in rust
Sitting in the old attic’s dim lighting
It revived memories uninviting
Her dauntless spirit still seemed to be there
Helen, hard at work in her wicker chair
The bobbin spun as she pressed the treadle
To mend her husband’s Civil War medal
The war years seemed like only yesterday
When the North fought in blue, the South in gray
Ben had battled Rebel troops at Bull Run
Led by McDowell in hot July sun
Hope was extinguished in a young girl’s heart
The first time she and Ben had been apart
He was one of thousands with no grave mark
The candle sputtered, spent, and all was dark

Be Wise – Minimize
Be wise
Minimize
Like downsize
All your supplies
You will shudder
With too much clutter
No word you can utter
If you are smothered
Just clear the place
To make more space
This could be the case
Of saving the human race
As you would assume
You will have more room
Then new life could bloom
And the energy would zoom
Just let it go
Toss and throw
To rebuild tomorrow
And watch it grow
So please guys
I emphasize
Be wise
Minimize

One was handsome with long hair, One was beautiful with long hair
One was carefree, One was careful
One with sense of family, One an orphan
One paid no attention, One always looked over the shoulder
One an elaborate thinker, One realistic
One was taken care of, The Other a caretaker
One loved for a time, One in love for all time
Both with a passion intensely shared
One dreamed of money, One dreamed of fame
One kept the beat, One sang along
One always pushing, One keeping up
One full of laughter, One full of words
One mechanical, One artistic
One with a goal, One with a dream
Together a force soon to ROCK the world

Such beautiful eyes
So full of mysterious disguise
They have the sheen
Of a light light green
And yellow as the autumn sky
As you gaze you wonder why
As I wait to meet
Surely my heart will greet
Of the feelings we share
Surely, Do we DARE
As we run through life amongst and with it
Through our devoted commitment
Follow the long forgotten past
In our hearts we know it will last
Our love is so fine
In our eyes you see it as we dine
To feel the warmth of her skin
The feelings I know she will let me in
From this day forward I know she is mine
Our love will last till the ends of all time
The feelings in my heart are a must
Truly, truly they are JUST!
Dedicated to a lady I know

My dear poet-
I am forever grateful to you
For allowing my body
To be your page
Letting your words
Ascend on my temple
And descend
On my feet
How long will I thank God
For giving me you
As our passionate and artistic sessions
Gracefully formed poetry in motion
Lord knows
My body yearned
And needed the eloquence
Your poetry provided
Our poetry combined
Gave birth to volcanic verses
And flood-like rushes
Of the most liberated conversation
My poet laureate
Thank you for allowing
Your art to transcend
Into poetic actions
Your ability to allow
Your love to flow
Like a pen on paper
Amazes me
When poets make love
Sacred books
Unlock their meanings
And the majestic powers of words
Fill the universe
With marvelous expressions
Our collaborated efforts
Awakened the most powerful of poets
Who long ago fell asleep
Happily summoned with the stars
To congratulate our poetic bliss
When we made love
Our poetry was forever
Imprinted in the hearts
of all poets
past, present, and yet to come
-Written and dedicated to a very dear poet (R.C.)
