Premium MemberThe Meteor is on its Way

O, how will we ever cope
The dreaded meteor is on its way
The weather mavens say ‘No hope’
that those dinosaurs will live another day

What will we tiny little mammals do
     without our super-sized friends
btw: They’re also predicting an ‘Ice Age’ soon
Whoa is us, inevitable is our end

But wait, what’s this I hear
     Wooly mammoth and Mr. Mastodon
   Grown large of a sudden
Surely we too can overcome our fear

                *****************

Millenia later, Charles Darwin wrote that all species must
change their ways from time to time...
         To survive, we adjust
having accumulated too much ‘climate convenience rust’

Backyard Fuzziness

Backyard mavens, wise crones
recall generations of groundhogs
that have dwelt in these hedgerows.

In winter
they seed the ground with 'Puffcorn Delites'
bought wholesale from Sam's Club.
The comfortable groundhogs nap in their burrows
contemplating evening feasts.

Furred paws in tartan house slippers
shuffle at back doors. A grey whiskered fuzziness
that is part critter, part elderly granny
stand ever ready
to lend a hand in case baby groundhogs
need burping.

October snow is headed our way
That's what the weather mavens all say

Something to brighten Halloween Day!
~ Little kids shivering in thin costumes will pay

             October 30, 2019
      2 - 6 inches of snow forecast
for the Chicago area on Halloween Day

John Lennon Lied To You

Lucy is not in the sky
like you were told.
Her feet or on the ground
holding a piece of coal.

The rocking horse people
took her diamond away
and smeared marshmallow pie
across her narrow face.

The marmalade sky’s
ozone has disintegrated,
from the fumes of cellophane
the flowers created.

The tangerine trees
turned to rust,
from newspaper taxis
exhaust pipe dust.

The girl with kaleidoscope eyes,
Immigrated to a safe haven.
Where She was detained
by border control mavens.

Aged Mavens

Steel blue eyes matching hair
concentrating hanging on every word
Wrinkles form around the perimeter
Guarded, buttressed full natural lips

Intently hanging on every word
Kicked by unaware intruder
Mindlessly stumbles over a misplaced foot
focus back to ancients

Partners hair white as untouched snow
at daylight
Oblivious to the world
They chat, express entwine
Lands lending to the intensity
of their conversation

Bent elbow on sunlit sill
show slits of silver of her eyes
locked in on orator slight
response reflective repose …

Animated expressions
move this speech
Steely eyes locked in
rock back now broad smile.
Lunch is over …

Fright Fest At My Nest

Hallowed Eve's, shuttering fright fest
Stealthy alias proffer lest
Ghoulish mavens chicanery manifest
Dupery, duplicity your mettle to test

Your makeup, clothes carefully screen
Bedeck your mask with orange and black sheen
Your collar coif, your black hair thoughtfully preen
Flowing cape with crafty folds wean

Avoid witches cold, steely stare
Her hexes and hoaxes beware
Stewing kettle with potions laid bare
Bubbling toxins your host will share

Accept your meager fare
Consume your rancid nightmare
Then quietly from my craven lair
With your jouls and remaining wits pare
