Paternal Grandfather Aaron Harris...
Lovely bones long since disintegrated
into dustbin of genealogical history,
if still alive would rank as oldest person
clocking another one incremental increase
asper in chronological number
anniversary of his birth occurring within July
year unknown, but within
latter decades nineteenth century
obviously conceived nine months prior
perhaps after raucous Thanksgiving feast,
where biological exuberance
induced natural throbs activating
indomitable rutting boisterous merriment.
Nary handy dandy scant blues clue known
about biography of aforementioned
long departed grandpa
only smidgen smudged details recalled
vague nebulous memories, these predicated
upon his every now and again visits, oft
times after he relocated to Florida
sporting tanned leathery
toughened crocodile hide
predictably, invariably, delicately donning
name brand signature
wrist watch, (albeit analog)
affixed loosely dangling
from his well weathered
lobster like bony south claw,
this singularly enigmatic
eye catching jewelry
captivating, fascinating, intriguing
glittering name brand trademark timepiece
affecting myself and siblings, especially youngest
asserting, contesting, vouchsafing...,
who would occupy coveted seat
closest to simple mechanical contraption.
After supper, he would regale
us three Harris grandchildren
(offspring begat in part courtesy
his favorite native son named Boyce
thee father to yours truly)
illustrating multifarious adept skill
folding sheets of outdated newspapers
creating cut out dolls strung together,
and/or the knack whereby
with few brisk
(i.e. Jewish version of origami),
he quickly styled boats, chairs, hats
none of which survived our rambunctious
severe tests of durability,
nor could any of us kids
reproduce with any remote success,
those deceptively
seemingly easy to craft
paper dolls linkedin with joined hands.
The store sign read “The Christmas House”
so we walked right in, greeted by giant Mouse!
Upon his head was a fluffy Santa Cap;
truly he was quite a friendly chap.
In the warm Foyer he took my coat;
a Chihuahua chorus barked holiday notes.
I knew they served great pet treats
but this place is amazing and sweet!
An elf waiter skated up to me
and handed me some wine and Brie!
To my dog Ben he gave a scone
shaped just like a big dog bone.
“Welcome, welcome, our new guests”
he sang to us with great zest;
“You’ll have the happiest time in here
I’m sorry, would you prefer a Nog or beer?”
I thanked him and said all was fine
and I swear that was a vintage wine.
we ate and drank and felt so merry,
I even enjoyed some plums and cherries.
Progressing to the other rooms
we smelled the finest of perfumes;
wafting from within the kitchen
of gingerbread, Ben ate a smidgen.
The next room had a singing snowman;
around him kittens played Kick The Can.
There were Christmas trees in each room
and pets could visit Santa on Zoom!
Christmas bones, and treat shaped mice;
were served by elves, how very nice;
I met the cat who did the cooking and baking,
jerky and chicken fingers he was making
Imagine my surprise as I drew near;
a cat chorus that brought me such cheer.
It was directed by a talented Dalmatian;
and my heart did swell with elation.
The harmony unlike any I’d heard,
those felines sounded just like songbirds.
poodles were hanging Christmas wreaths
a beagle hung icicles on a tree.
The animals left with packages galore;
it was a fine place, that’s for sure.
As we left a Great Dane gave a shout,
“Next year they’re hav’in a bigger blowout!”
“A Merry Christmas to Ben and his human,
we thank you for stopp’in by and Zoom’in.”
I wished them all great holiday cheer
and Ben and I’ll sure be back next year.
Maybe you’ve seen Janet
she’s from another planet
making all her regular stops
at the local charity shops
loves a second hand rail or two
lives in the land of good as new
to knock and shock them in the aisles
with frocks and socks of different styles
for Bolton she’s a smidgen bold
but not one to be pigeonholed
Maybe you’ve seen Janet
she’s from another planet
not for her those workaday suits
but rodeo clothes, matching boots
and swirling curls of shades cerise
ignoring the local taste police
from Morris Green to the Market Hall
she’s always sure to wow them all
wishing on luck to get her through
beyond the latest interview
Maybe you’ve seen Janet
she’s from another planet
offered work at a pub in town
never shirked, to hold it down
pulling pints and measuring shots
her Cheeky Vimto hit the spot
not afraid of mopping the loo
hosting quiz nights, meat raffles too
gave the old place its heart and zing
'til it’s caged till started to sing
Maybe you’ve seen Janet
she’s from another planet
today a tavern’s set adrift
Jan didn’t turn up for her shift
with no replies from flat or phone
the landlord sighed and turned to stone
as whiskey thoughts turned extra sour
cops said give it twenty four hours
but customers are asking round
they're longing for her cheerful sound
Maybe you’ve seen Janet
She’s from another planet.
Here is my newborn brother to celebrate the day!
Together we'll splash around in mud spots eating tater tots.
Wake-up, my brother, wake-up and let's play!
There's no time for a baby snooze for the sun we shall lose!
I'll have you hold the phone books while I get a cookie from the high nooks.
Here is my newborn brother to to celebrate the day!
Slip 'n' slides and kiddie pools, otter pops and pizza!
You have no idea the magic things hidden beyond your eyelids!
Wake-up, my brother, wake-up and let's play!
You do like sleeping, don't you? This we'll have to fix.
Maybe mom can whip you up a snack of caffeinated Chex-Mix.
Here is my newborn brother to celebrate the day!
We will certainly rule the planet together one day, you and I.
As King Brothers: Your Highness Who Does Stuff and Your Highness Who Doesn't.
Wake-up, my brother, wake-up and let's play!
Yawwwckk, now I'm sleepy, move your teeny arm a smidgen.
Maybe tomorrow when we're both awake we'll catch a pigeon.
Here is my newborn brother to celebrate the day!
Wake-up, my brother, wake-up and let's play!

"Brotherly Love"
Matt Caliri
I have always been a minimalist in my writing
using simple words and no ornamentation
I cannot do iambic pentameter
yet, my writing has a melody and rhythm
I started as a bitty little girl
in an attic room penning stories
negligible
a speck, a smidgen in the scope of this world
I saw a million things from my attic window
the birds, the seasons, the sky
I was bullied in school as a child
so I felt belittled and beaten down
but in my writing I threw off the scars
I still do with words unadorned and pure
I have been to the darkest, fathomless pit
had nothing
been an underling to abuse
kept down
but inside a humble flame burned
and I refused to be diminished one day beyond
so, I crawled up from my pit of nothingness
and I stand here a simple girl
who writes minimal art . . .

The World Unknown to me
Let me write of things I do not know
underneath the folds of nothing
beneath a fake moon's glow
I'll write about my pretend university days
and my dope smoking ways
traveling life high
experiential artistic faze
In the company of fifty shady ladies
with long sexy legs
who thought I was amazing
screaming out my name in praise
I could write about here or there
about having balls so big
nothing would give me a scare
Others could admire me
saying "Boy he has a pair"
Yes I'd be someone
suave and debonair
a golden boy
with long flowing Fabio hair
reclining enticingly in a chair
with throngs of made up people
mesmerized as they stare
Me being aloof as if I didn't care
Or maybe I'll write about
jumping from a plane
how I only travel in the fast lane
Can you relate to the pretend things
that reside in my brain
Come travel with me on a bullet train
Run through the streets naked
in the pouring hot summer rain
This world of illusion
is mine to maintain
The fabric of thought
can take the strain
If I don't like something
I just rewrite it again
after all depending on what I make up
You might learn
I'm a smidgen away
from being
on the precipice of insane
Cracked or cool
a pretend genius
wrapped in the skin of a fool
Words written are a powerful tool
watch the unwinding of my spool
Lessons taught by observing
the apposing things in life that duel
Come sit at the bench
Roll up sleeves pull up a stool
fable and pen are waiting
spill red ink on paper you are born to rule
this is a different kinda school
We are all teachers
ideas are the fuel!
I tried to capture this freedom
To capture it within a thought
For a time it seemed to hover
but freedom wasn't what I got
It seems my thinking lacked feeling
True freedom I couldn't explain
My mind it became a prison
This freedom was locked in my brain
By the morning I lost my mind
I felt it slipping from my grasp
Freedom found it's true expression
When it was released from my past
It seem that freedom is simple
It doesn't care what others think
It can't be found in a bottle
It can't be poured out like a drink
Once you have tasted its flavour
There can be no going back
Open the door just a smidgen
Freedom will provide what you lack.
Inspired by Peter Duggan.
Silently mumbling under your breath,
you toss and turn, unable to sleep.
For self-doubt sentences love to death;
as feelings flow from shallow to deep.
Secreted within your heart and soul;
fragmented dreams morph into despair.
And those that still leave you feeling whole
are fragile; so handle them with care.
Truth frightens hearts wounded by its sting;
for once trust falters, nothing is clear.
And your heart knows the pain lies can bring;
thus, love comes with a smidgen of fear.
Ignoring imposed logic or norms;
love's known to turn dreamers into fools.
And instigate emotional storms;
not subject to reality's rules.
And yet, a growing upsurge of hope,
got you to believe souls can combine.
And spinning strands of trust into rope,
two souls conjoin: as lovers entwine.
White as a sheet ghostly color,
sans countenance of mine
