Premium Member Counto To 10

When I get angry or frustrated with my governor, my country or at the world these days
I do something my parents suggested way back when…
I pause…I take a deep breath…and then I count to 10.

When we parked the car at the beach 1 moon was hovering in the air.
A quick look in both directions told me we were the only 2 people there.

The moonlight illuminated everything but 3 stars were still visible in the sky…
Bathed in that same moonlight 4 dolphins came frolicking by.

I counted 5 different sandcastles…abandoned…decaying gradually
I saw 6 pelicans in formation gliding just above the sea.

As we turned around and headed back I counted 7 fisherman who hadn’t been there before.
While 8 tiny sandpipers hunting for breakfast scurried along the shore.

In the final leg or our walk 9 palm trees I detected…
and when I looked into our bag…10 sea shells we’d collected.

My parents knew what would happen when they suggested it way back when…
How it would take me a little while to count from 1 to 10.

A pleasant little interruption…a few moments to allow my mind to stray…
A wonderful distraction from the problems of the day.

No…the world didn’t change in the time it took me to count from 1 to 10…
but that wonderful distraction did give me more energy…
to enter the fray again.

The kids are gone, I'm retired, I'm taking a long vacation,
To an island with sunny beaches - that's my destination!
I'll spend the days savoring a climate of seventy-two degrees,
Snoozing beneath the palms, fanned by an ocean breeze!

Each morn as I stretch and yawn to meet another gorgeous day,
A glorious sunrise greets me from across the shimmering bay!
I release the worries and frustrations from my languid soul,
As upon the beautiful, sandy strand I take my morning stroll!

'Tis soothing to the ear as the surf floods the pristine beach.
Beyond that there is heard only the terns' occasional screech.
Sandpipers and sidling crabs entertain me scurrying about.
I watch a ship across the aqua sea, plying its leisurely route!

'Tis relaxing to sip a rum swizzle when another day is done,
And just sit back to enjoy the grandeur of the setting sun!
Later, as though emerging from the sea, rises a brilliant moon,
And romantic music serenades me from across the lagoon!

I'll have a lobster dinner, then to bed because it's getting late,
Or maybe a dip in the surf! But hold on! Just a minute! Wait!
Gliding across the moonlit beach something makes my eyes gleam!
A bikini-clad beauty....! Alas, the missus pokes me shattering my dream!

Their Last Moment Of Glory

This uncompromising Sunday
has agreed to let us enjoy
what is left of a boring day
as we ardently seek the brief presence
of a radiant sunset resembling red clay,
attesting the inevitable evidence.

The purple lilacs and pink tulips gently sway,
nobody listens to the crickets' soothing sounds;
early at sunrise they were inundated by big waves
and torrents of unmerciful rain pelting on the bay.

Every Bayberry and Crape Myrtle shrub has fragrant flowers,
they attract Sandpipers, Snowy Plovers and Monarch Butterflies;
they all feast on them, then they take off with incredible swiftness:
while the tranquil and brilliant sea resounds with various shrills.

I spot from far the noisy seagulls landing on the Church's steeple,
scattering the Gray Catbirds huddled on long cable wires that were
listening to the choir of faithful marching out with glowing smiles,
cherishing their last moment of glory under brilliant September's skies.

Premium Member Seaside Serenade

Wind and sea and waves and sun
sand in toes as day is done
Seagulls glide, sandpipers run
young dad splashes with his son

Breakers rise, translucent teal
   lifeguards poised as youngsters squeal
Seniors search for shells - they feel
twelve again as sun rays heal

Sky on fire towards the west
   clouds in lustrous fashion dressed
Cosmic artistry - I'm blessed
songs of peace swirl through my chest

Violins waft quietly
  over swelling timpani
Saxophone soars soulfully
bidding hearts to be set free

Blushing scarlet, clouds advance
  smell of salty foam enchants
Palm trees sway as in a trance
recalls young love's first slow dance

Couples stroll, fingers entwined
share a kiss if so inclined
Rising moon smiles as designed:
gives the anxious peace of mind

Waves still warm from midday blaze
  surfers dance in sea-mist haze
Sailboats flee from stress-filled days
  springtime struts; summer sashays

Life’s Timeless Driftwood

Peering back at the shadow stretching,
continuance knows well the peaceful silhouettes from horizon's light,
ancestral sequences having frequented one’s shore many times.

All is as it has been.

One’s longevity holds firm,
like isolated fingers protruding in protest
from sequestered driftwood blanketed by sand,
unready to move on,
just yet.

Just as sandpipers scavenge wet bubbles along the beach,
furtively running zigs and zags,
avoiding swooping wings overhead,
we too avoid termination,
with luck.

Destiny continues to lap the shore,
its gentle hands tugging
into tomorrow’s warm waters.
man’s stubborn endurance.

So mighty…

This evolving limbed-strength,
accepting of journey’s tempest,
willing to ready again for the next leg of one’s odyssey.

Even as…

White caps thunder applause,
at the elongated shadow of remaining branches
fading into the day's dusk,
signaling a tide ready to lift
to carry to the next shoreline and beyond.

Roots have withered,
growth's ever changing leaves and bark
have become morsels of love and loss,
an existence mixing peacefully toward ghostly remnants.

At some point…

The water rises,
the fiber and strands of resistance soften,
dissolving into a new connection
as birth's salt and brine prepare the next iteration,
the next surge upward,
another tenacious wave of purpose
exploding its final power
into a mist imploring remembrance
before the oneness of completion
cycles again into its new existence.

Such is the gift of time and space,
the requisite condition for permanence,
where presence once created
evolves unfettered in perpetuity.

FOOTPRINTS AND SANDPIPERS

On a recent walk along the beach…where the ocean meets the land
what captured my attention were all the footprints in the sand.

We watched sandpipers darting to and fro
tiptoeing between the water and the land
pursuing their next meal…leaving tiny footprints in the sand.

We saw people walking, families playing, children making castles with their hands.
while others laughed, or ran, or skipped…leaving footprints in the sand.

It wasn’t just how many there were…spreading out across the land
It was also the diversity…of those footprints in the sand.

I kept wondering…were they young or old…
gay or straight
black or white…
was it a woman or a man
who walked this beach before us and left these footprints in the sand?

As you walk along the beach you feel a harmony
with the sky…the sea…the land…
and that day I felt that same harmony with those footprints in the sand.

And I had to smile as we walked…thinking…wouldn’t it be grand…
if the only way to judge a person…was by their footprints in the sand?

Would there be prejudice and bigotry?
Would people be ridiculed…or banned
If the only way to judge them was from their footprints in the sand?

And I wondered if we should all be more like sandpipers
who, as they scamper, dash and stand,
tread softly
and live in harmony…
while making footprints in the sand.

Who understand the key to life
is to live nobly
and dignified
and grand…
before our time is up
and the tide washes away
our footprints in the sand.

Premium Member PARK PERSCRIPTIONS

Doctors are increasingly prescribing walks in nature…with the ultimate goal
to improve our hearts, and bodies…while soothing our minds and souls.

So yesterday to prove our doctors right
We took a walk along the beach…bathed in the full moon’s light.

We woke up long before the sun…and under a super moon
donned jackets in the Florida cold…and headed for the dunes.

We arrived before the birds…the sand was still a mottled mix of black and grey…
We had to watch our steps at first…with only the moon to light our way.

A walk in nature is a treat for our senses…
not to mention our arms and legs and joints
and from the moment we saw the moon reflecting off the water…
it did not disappoint.

We heard the crunch of sand beneath our feet
felt the the wind as it rustled through the trees…
tasted the salt and smelled the aroma of the ocean
as they floated on the morning breeze.

Suddenly the sky and shores were alive with birds
as they welcomed in the day…
seagulls, willets, sandpipers, skimmers…and white pelicans across the bay.

The first half of our walk, facing the moon, was a slow and meandering one…
and once the moon set behind the trees…we turned our attention to the sun.

It was as if the moon slowly pulled the night shade open
as she set before our eyes…
working in synchronistic harmony…in time for the sun to rise.

This walk provided us a multitude of ways…
to add peace and harmony to our night and serenity to our day.

Perhaps that is natures intention with every walk…her objective…her final goal
giving us a way to unburden our minds, comfort our hearts and quietly soothe our souls.

Which is what we did this morning…walking the beach next to an ocean with no borders…
enjoying nature and all her beauty…
just following doctor’s orders.

Premium Member Nature's Call

Beyond these walls
I step
and abandon
myself
to nature's
siren call.

Restless winds
beckon
crashing waves
roar
and thunder
rumbles from
afar.

My pulse is
quickened
I feel alive.

A moody sky glares
under an iridescent
glow
as emerald forests
frame distant
mountain peaks.

Wild, unpredictable
I thrill in the drama
as I watch seagulls
draft currents
small crabs
scurrying
sandpipers earnestly
poking
for grubs.

My essence is
wrapped
within the
womb
of nature.

My heart is
entwined
within its mighty
spell
it cannot be
undone.

Blue Sky On the Beach

gentle waves tiptoe ashore
sandpipers scurrying away from the rippling tide
sandcastles looming in the distance
beach blanket knights
and sand dune days
radiant in the mid day sun
shades of glistening brown and red
and dark sunglasses
a red and yellow kite gently dances
in the midst of a gentle sea breeze
shuffle on the shoreline
as rays swim by
sand dollar days
and the slow rising tide
sweet gentle rhythm of a rolling wave
aqua blue waters
to put your mind at ease
and a blanket of blue with cotton candy clouds
slowly drifting across the afternoon sky
sands of time pass on the beach
