Night Bewitches Sponsored by: Shadow Hamilton
A dream is a microscope through which we look at the hidden occurrences in our souls. Erich Fromm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the placidity of the night's embrace,
bewitched the cosmos with an arcane grace.
The moon, a silver orb, may induce its rise.
Oozing its ethereal aurora over the skies
Whispers of worm words waft on wafture wear,
As the stars spangle, their nexus is spare.
The night wiles with its vestigial spell,
Drawing us in, under a talisman dwell.
Penumbras plaster pegs poltergeists of trees,
The twilight augury decry casts souls at ease.
Geezers of nightgown awaken from slumber,
Suing solace in the Cimmerian shade to clamber
The eventide sky overawes with a cosmic array.
Stars bedazzle and coxswain us on our way.
Moonlight sumptuous aura in a gentle glow,
Steer us through the shadow as the nexus flows.
Ebony necromancy decry a glamorous sight.
Drawing us close to the serendipity of the night.
In this cosmic wee hour, dreams bear flight.
Our souls are raised, and our hearts blight.
So let us indulge in this nocturnal delight,
As dusk vamps, squirting a glamor of delight.
Let us wander in the moonlit haze,
As sableness susurrous surreptitious sprays
Wee crepuscule twiddles, a plum night symphony
Where conceit phantasm and verity shed sympathy
Allotting an awareness acumen ariose and aureate
Upon ubiquitous utters uncanny unsophisticate.
I once was a beautiful lass
who captured every young man’s fancy
A nymph of the high Southern class
who practiced a belle’s necromancy.
They worshipped my haughty fine grace
they catered to temper and whim
A moment to gaze on my face
sent rent hearts to pain, prayer, and hymn.
But now I lie cold in my grave
festered and worm-eaten I be
With neither a knight nor a knave
to worship or lie beside me.
"Deep Memory" originally appeared in Wilum Pugmire's anthology Visions of Kroy'don (1978) and the same editors ***** Madness (1980). It was collected in The Ghost Garden (Liverpool: Dark Dreams Press, 1988) and in Sorceries & Sorrows (Early Poems) Polk City, Iowa: Chris Drumm Books, 1992, in a limited edition of 100 copies. It's included in my big forthcoming Hippocampus Press collection The Ghost Garden and Further Spirits.
Hejama, seventh daughter of a seventh daughter of a Thessaly queen.
A natural proponent of black magic, sorcery, witchcraft and wizardry
Undlela ziimhlope, Aunt Vernafi suggested. An herb you will enjoy.
Hejama did not often take Aunt Vernafi’s advice, but this time she did.
Through necromancy she met a chief goddess, Hecate, Greek legend.
Crossroads between this world and the next. Keeper of Hade’s gates.
Not that one! Hecate would hiss as Hejama rummaged through forests
Seeking plants that could cure rheumatism, arthritis, and flu.
Along the way she regaled and delighted Hejama with mythologies.
Empusae are my children, Hecate revealed. They seduce travelers.
Furies, winged creatures who punished wrong doers, came too.
Fierce hounds traveled into the forest with them, braying loudly.
Hejama felt honored to have Hecate accompany her as her spirit guide.
I witnessed the abduction of Persephone, Hecate confided.
This led to a wonderful tale, as they collected herbs to help others.
Ghostly figures followed Hecate, trying for her attention.
She laughed about this, ignoring them in the day time.
I am a night deity, she told Hejama. I am yours during the day.
An honor only given to a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter.
An ethereal dichotomy
governs my magnificent
muse,
Where adversarial forces
seamlessly, elegantly infuse.
They walk the knife- edge of
a psychological design,
A gorgeous synthesis of the
Deviant and the Divine.
One side is draped in
celestial, shimmering grace,
The other, an abyssal,
beautifully wicked embrace.
The divine architecture rises
in a cathedral of light,
Forging pristine inspirations
out of the chaotic night.
It whispers of high,
transcendent, immaculate
art,
Pumping absolute perfection
through a mortal heart.
With fingers of gold, this holy
aspect creates,
And opens the grand,
celestial, welcoming gates.
Yet, a dark necromancy stirs
beneath the serene facade,
A rebellious, deviant spirit
that refuses to applaud.
It is the wild, untamed, and
provocative flame,
Unbound by conventions,
entirely impossible to tame.
This shadow- dancer shatters
the sacred, fragile rules,
Mocking the stiff, puritanical
doctrines of fools.
Without the deviant spark,
the divine grows completely
cold;
Without the celestial
majesty, the chaos cannot
hold.
Together they twist in a
magnificent, creative dance,
Holding my captured mind in
a perpetual trance.
They are the opposing pillars
of a singular, brilliant throne,
The most intoxicating
masterpiece I have ever
known.
"Possums on the Run - Part 1"
Well she ran away
Revolutionary Dance
Jokers are trumps
Euchre, 500,
Queens Slippers
no Deuce, no Romance
Holey holy
blue jeans torn and buried
underneath the house
with uneaten sandwiches
going mouldy in plastic lunch bags,
old unwanted items, school books
torn pages, hessian bags, burnt pots,
newspaper wrappings fading
tales of the city with
dreams of necromancy.
She’s upstairs deliberating
sitting at the kitchen table
writing her stories
Over with doing the dishes
done with Rainbow Princesses,
homework squats and
buried small town garbage runs
over strawberry jam and creamed up
Sunday Cream Buns.
A good day out
some holiday
collecting cut grass
she stands watching
red skinned motor mower man
barking orders
while the other daughters
stand en garde cross-armed
no hat, sun burnt,
barefeet, blistering in the
boiling Sun.
En Garde, patiently waiting
watching Frilly Lizard Black Boy
Kangaroo Paw Hibiscus
“There’s a tortoise under the
outside dunny!”
there’s a flaming tortoise
on the run
slow mode
totally bizarre,
wonders where
it came from…she thinks,
“run tortoise run”.
She knows better, she’s 17,
she’s the Dancing Queen,
she’s Top Gun.
In the realms of novelty and man's intrigue,
A chimera emerged, a contradiction unique.
With the head and breast of a lion's might,
and a serpent's tail that slithers—a fearsome sight.
Oh, how the chimera did pickle the mind,
With its fickle nature, a paradox is unkind.
A parody of existence, a void it did fulfill,
Buzzing with uncertainty, a rush of thrill
In this embodiment of my lifestyle choice,
I sought to unravel the chimera voice.
For within its essence, a secret did hide,
One body, two creatures, a sorcery untied
I turned to chiromancy, reading palms with care.
Seeking answers in the lines of fate laid bare.
But the chimera secrets eluded my touch.
For its destiny was not written in such
I delved into cartomancy, the art of the cards.
Hoping to find answers and break through the guards.
But the chimera destiny remained concealed.
In the deck of cards, the truth was not revealed.
I ventured into the realm of necromancy.
Summoning spirits to unlock the chimera fancy
But the spirits remained silent.
Their insight couldn't pierce the chimera strident.
In Greek mythology, it was said to be a beast.
But this chimera nature remained a feast.
A contradiction of life, a paradox untamed
The chimera parody, forever unclaimed
In the depths of its being, it defied all norms.
A creature of paradox, with its own forms.
A chimera, they called it, a myth brought to life,
A contradiction that challenged the realms of strife.
O, the chimera parody, a puzzle untold,
Its novelty is captivating, a story to behold.
A creature of contradiction, defying all odds,
In the depths of its being—a power that nods
Man's fascination with this enigmatic creature
The chimera legacy is a symbol of nature.
For in its existence, we find ourselves reflected,
In its contradictions, our truths are detected.
Given as a gift
But seen as punishment
He clothed them in skin
Bound with animal
To roam in fear
Manifesting man's sin
Self-preservation
Defensively moving
To find a place of rest
Knowledge for longing
That reached to take
What was NOT given or blessed
Insolence identifying
Pride roaring about
Against authority
Necromancy of old
Connecting the worlds
To gain the final majority
S...K...I...N...
Meant to be shed
For clear, strong connection
Moving in freedom
With FATHER LOVE
Ending possibility of insurrection
Do you still have SKIN...
Havoc is when all hell is loose,
This night belongs to all of you...
To the pumpkins slashed into lanterns
“Stingy Jack” his trusty O’ hand returns.
Ne'er-do-wells started carving crude faces,
whose gutted innards a candle replaces.
To the black cats with yellow eyes
Screech and scratch with no alibis.
To the banshees of the ancient Celtic folklore
Wailing at death, deep red eyes, features worn to the core
To the monsters deformed and hunched back
Bolts, nuts, and green skin, lurching and ready to attack!
The night belongs to zombies revived by voodoo.
And by the necromancy practices that you may do
They the living dead who may walk amongst
Pay respect to them in mercy goe with you alongst!
To the goblins that go bump in the night, and ghosts
Wicked fairies and evil spirits their hosts
Grotesque goblettes vengeance they choose,
Invisible underneath white sheets shout boo's
To the witches and warlocks who enchant
Their wands and wide brim pointy hats so gallant
As practitioners evoking spells of black magic
Rootstock and smelly herbs stirred with a stick.
Boiling remnants of bones and lizards
Digesting glands of bird’s gizzards
To candy corn rich red, yellow and white
Kids walking from house to house, smiles so bright,
To the Trick or Treat screams and chants
If your dressed to scare plenty of candy it grants.
Trick or treat we will, without any fright,
Our Halloween night will surely be filled with delight.
Here we come to trick or treat.
Please give us some candy sweets.
*Goblettes - woman goblins
NATURAL, FEMALE she is poetry's core
A ROMANCE of the ages, now burned
But SEASONED SAGED to see what's in store,
New PAGE turned, lessons returned
She longs for the spew, the geyser's might
MA-GIVER of FIRE and true desire,
Soft as a woman holding the light,
Wet with the dew of the Amazon's pyre
WATER breaking, making draughters
To currents of talk, a blue blood stream,
Flumes flow below where futures expand
A broad expanse, a waking dream,
NECROMANCY on shifting sand
RHEOLOGY charts the change we know
MIDASOREAL touch, a golden sting
PUNCTURING darkness where seeds now grow,
NANOBOOMS echo as life takes wing
BIOLOGICALCOLOSSUS starts to creep,
BURROWING deep, the pulse we trace,
ELECTROGRAM where secrets sleep,
RAPIDPHOTOSYNTHESIS finds its space
A RUFFLE then a CHEW_SPIT, GUSH,
NANO_FISH swim, then ANALYZE we must,
IMBUE the worth that can be found,
DRESSED TO THRILL, returning dust to dust
EARTHEN MOUND, humblaia, mistress,
MATRIMONIAL HONEYMOON SEASONED ROUNDS, RUSH IN, the BY and BY
in a birthritten trust, where variety abounds
WHERE WE ARE FOUND,
EarThen Eye OfMined
