Son, I'm so proud that you elected to serve in the United States Marines.
Military service is a family tradition - it just happens to be in our genes!
Your forefathers have worn the uniform since the genesis of this nation.
All were privileged to serve, feeling that it was their solemn obligation!
One of your distant relatives served as a lieutenant in The Revolution.
He lost an arm at Brandywine to boost this nation's glorious evolution!
A soldier on your mother's side was a sergeant in the Battle of New Orleans.
In letters he told of subsisting on meager rations of rancid pork and beans!
A grandfather shouldered a musket in the Mexican War affair.
Another, a corporal of cavalry in the Union Army served with elegant flair!
In the Spanish-American fray, one of your kin charged up San Juan Hill.
Your great grandpa led a platoon in World War One with consummate skill!
Your granddad was a fighter pilot in the South Pacific and became an ace,
And he later soared as an astronaut through the vast reaches of space!
I was privileged to serve as an army chaplain during the Korean War.
Your Aunt Sarah served with distinction in Viet Nam with the Nurses Corps!
So, you see son, you have a distinguished heritage upon which to build,
Serving all humankind to ensure that our quest for liberty is fulfilled!
Godspeed, Marine! Here's my old wartime copy of the Twenty-Third Psalm.
When assailed from all sides, it will provide you with great solace and calm!

There is no plum-colored ermine trimmed cloak to be worn,
and no one's pen is a royal scepter which gems will adorn.
Poets are just ordinary people whose creations are born
from their creative thoughts when hearts are joyful or torn.
There is no regal king to obey when he makes a demand,
nor an army to do his bidding when he barks out a command.
No captains are needed to shout orders. We're all a deckhand.
Court jesters at midnight hour, dipping quills in an inkstand.
So, whether your name is Don Juan, Petunia Pig, or Lil Wayne,
none of us should be proclaiming we're flying the airplane
If it's a throne any of you seek, your attempted coup is in vain.
I only speak for myself when I advocate for "No Purple Reign."

That's The Way Love Goes
Writer swept yon lea, loft a lane, ambled quest
efforts a muted affair bolted at wished stars
magic toils those ravenous eyes crave involved cars
trifles and trinkets mortals link to their life's vest
Amply equipped Cupid master of aims has drawn
as genteel cherubs gather about heart seekers
arrows tipped in numbing ecstasy paired squeakers
evokes the peers of Cleopatra and Don Juan
Effects the sense resisters to fathomless mirth
bathe in invigorating currents souls awash
noumenon presents a harmonious panache
outfits the united spirits, immortal worth
Yon measures reach, fantasies assumed its sources
behold while narratives reinvent ere closes
twilight falls in dawns arms of day's, then dusk poses
slack pen set, zephyrs o'er lea, lane tryst courses.

Whether it be sixteen years
Whether it be one hundred
I will always choose you
My darling husband
No matter in this lifetime
Or in the next
You are the one I love
Always the very best
If I could go back
Way back in time
To our wedding day
To our vows and smiles
All those joys
And happiness
All those memories
Our wedding kiss
I would still choose you
I would still choose us
This wedded bliss extends
To our every loving touch
For we are connected
Our souls and hearts
Our love and light flows
Through our life and honour
So, whether it be sixteen years
Whether it be one hundred
I will always, always choose you
My darling, darling husband

at the break of dawn
a Hummingbird starts his rounds
Morning Glory sought
flaunting a red hue -
Mexican Sunflower tempts
looking hot, hot, hot
the Don Juan of birds
sucking nectar from Beardtongue. . .
drunk on French kisses
Goldenrod at noon. . .
Zephyr carries a sweet scent
beneath a gold sun
between Rose bushes
the Flower Kisser gets lost
in Blue Infinity
Sweet Pea and Bee Balm
entice with purple petals. . .
Bees join the orgy
Monarchs swarm in droves
when blue Hummingbird alights
on Butterfly Bush
Evening Primrose
waving in the dusk’s last breeze. . .
the proper lover
the Flower Kisser
leaves his harem sated as
white Moonflower glows

There was an old lady
Who flew like a swallow.
She weight sixty pounds
‘Cuz her bones were hollow.
She flew through the air
Wherever she went.
She slept in a tree
And didn’t pay rent.
One unlucky morning,
She fell from the sky.
Her arms were all heavy
And she couldn’t fly.
Seems she was anemic
And feeling quite sick.
She ironed her shirt
And that did the trick.
Went south for the winter,
Flew into a cliff;
It seems she’d used starch,
And her arms were too stiff.
So now she takes Delta,
When she takes the skies:
San Juan Capistrano
To see butterflies.
One bright sunny morning
The monarchs came in.
The old lady decided
To take flight again.
A bit out of practice,
She thought that she’d try;
She opened her mouth
And swallowed a fly.
There weren’t any spider,
But swallows instead.
She choked on a swallow
And ended up dead.
So now you’re stuck singing
A song that’s absurd
And trying to remember
If there was a bird.
I can’t seem to end this;
I’ll try to comply.
At least you know now
Why she swallowed that fly.
Nature so feels the murmur of summer,
And the whispers of many young dreams;
With spring past, the vibrant newcomer,
Bears gilded rays and clouds of cream.
Romantic red robin becomes a Don Juan,
With his sweet and captivating tune;
Seedlings grow before the season's gone,
Dance of silvery breezes under the moon.
Nature perceives the rapture of roses,
And the untamed beat of all wild things,
And feels His joy anytime God composes,
With all young life softly blossoming!
Dignified toad croaks on his lily pad,
As giddy lovers plan for their wedding,
While all the world now seems so glad,
And is why myriad blooms are spreading!
I was feeling grand like the leader of the band,
But you departed south to a Caribbean island; and it was
Just about the time I fell for you and was quickly set aflame.
I thought you would return, but back to me you never came.
Nevertheless, I got over you and never pouted or cast blame.
And then, after a long season, by chance, I saw you on a bus.
That's when I knew for sure; that was clearly the end of us.
So yes, you broke my heart, but I was able to make a new start.
Yes, I managed to overcome you, but I'm not saying that it wasn't hard.
You were very high class, but things started to unravel so very fast.
I had no reason to think that the joy we began to share wouldn't last.
No, you were not the first, and as time unfolded, you wouldn't be the last.
There were others who whispered sweet sounds into my ears and quietly passed. I'm no iron man, but this heart of mine became experienced in the school of aching, and it seems that each of my heartaches and breaks hurt differently than the last breaking. It hurts real bad when love ends so soon, striking at noon, and the flame is out by the entry of the moon. Maybe it was Memphis, or perhaps Sioux Falls or Chicago, or was it San Juan, Puerto Rico? The time came when it really didn't matter anymore; when I slowly closed the door and let it go. Funny thing about heartbreaks; they are unique but all feel the same, so filled with pain. I tell you, there is no shame, and I think that like the butterfly, I learned to fly from lessons 'in cocoons of strain'.
