Word play, captures me, takes me hostage,
Keeps me enthralled, Entranced, fascinated
Intrigued as nothing else can today
Obsessively manipulated by this passion
I am hopelessly at her mercy. Giving up other things,
Rebuking people, Held in willing exile by word play
She wakes me up with a line in my head.
At two or three many mornings.
Keeps me alive, not fully in this world,
But rather in a linguistic realm, where I could escape
I smile, knowing my personalities and proclivities.
When I stop playing with these squiggles and dots
I will walk away, cold turkey, wiping my sandals off
Never to pick a pen or a pencil up again.
Will it be soon?
That's the beauty of it.
I never know
until that day.
An abecedarian Australian animal activist
Bagged bodacious big bucks
Caustically criticizing crocodiles,
Driving darling dragons
Essentially extinct. Eschewing
Fact, fabricating fanciful fiction,
Grifting gloriously,
He haughtily held hostage
Important, instructive information,
Juxtaposed jaundiced, junk
Kangaroo kills,
Leveling large lizard libel,
Manufacturing marsupial misinformation malevolently.
On other ominous occasions,
Preferring pernicious propaganda,
Quickly, querulously, quashed
Real, rational reports, rather,
Substituted several substantially
Tarnished technical travesties,
Undermining unified understanding.
Very vociferously, viciously
Wrote works without warrant,
Xenophobic xenotypic
yarns, yammering yellow-bellied yawps,
Zombie-like, zealously.
"The seeds of freedom cannot flourish in flames of fire"
the poet
I look with ominous concern on this independence day;
The ruling class, donned in the clothing of a sheep,
While a compliant population still remains asleep;
Our rights and liberties propelled into decay.
A society, ‘progressive’, erodes morality with fantasy and lies;
Lies construed as hope and change
With a nefarious agenda to rearrange
An ideology that threatens our freedoms in covert disguise.
“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” is fading away;
mandates without truth in science
holds us hostage in compliance;
our inalienable rights, born to us, a fray.
It took a revolution for freedoms to be achieved,
freedoms being quelled into a memory of old
The tenants of our constitution have been divisively sold,
To a diabolical agenda that will not yield, until our freedoms are bereaved.
I once suffered a strong arm robbery on a dark Chicago street. Halfway down the block, I saw two young men turn the corner and headed in my direction. That had never happened before, and I could not have outrun them if I wanted to. So I proceeded and faced them head-on, accepting whatever was coming my way. Afraid and speechless after being robbed of $90, I continued my duties for the night. Why did I go home, refresh myself, and proceed to continue my assigned task in spite of my fears?. You don't always know why, but sometimes, you just do ''it" anyway.
On another occasion, a gentleman said to me, "Don't you know that you are in 'the snake pit?" Again, although calm and sounded no alarms, I feared great bodily harm. And just in the nick of time, a good Samaritan from the neighborhood came to my rescue, demanding that I be left alone.
I was guilty of trying to make a difference in the lives of drug addicts and spent many hours pleading with them to make a change. Doubtless, I was guilty of introducing Christ to the inner city people of Chicago. During the late 60's and early 70's, I was frequently found on streets in danger zones and in high rise housing projects.
I knew the danger that I constantly faced as I went many times alone in places I had to go. In spite of the fear of real danger, I proceeded anyway. I'm not the bravest person around, not a fighter, nor do I carry weapons, but on many occasions I have forced myself in the midst of my fears, to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I knew that God was with me, but I must confess, I was still afraid and feared evil. However, I refused to allow the fear of evil to arrest, captivate, imprison, and hold me hostage.

Poems creep in like spiders, capturing me in web so fair.
Poems slip in like mice, sticky traps holding them in place.
Poems prance in like majorettes, throwing batons in the air.
Sci-Fi dances around in my muse’s brain, taking all the space.
Poems twirl around my dendrite highway, waking me up.
Poems shake me off the bed, landing me squarely on the floor.
I hear the last line, and I think “was that word buttercup?”
Poems laugh at my consternation, their humor I deplore.
Poems slide by on the wings of undiscovered pretty galaxies.
They jump into my head at restaurants when I cannot find a pin.
Poems dive bomb my bed at night, witch-like in their hex-ease.
They throw themselves at me in bathrooms; I simply cannot win.
I do the best I can though, amusing poems in ways I do not dream.
They throw down words I have never heard, and so I look them up.
Poems own me, taking me hostage in a pretty hostage stream.
Did you hear that? I have to know. Was that word buttercup?
When I was small, I loved to hear my mother sing
It's int'resting, the things that we repress
Today, I can't recall a verse,
I just recall the lies
We'd been estranged for years when I learned she had died
and I arranged to see her only then
My childhood home was full of ghosts and boogiemen
Would they rise from the box she'd put aside?
Just wedding photos. Nice surprise,
it could have been much worse
A smiling bride. What writhed beneath, no one could guess
She'd held my father hostage with that ring
She left to me the house, this box and one more thing -
a square of silk cut from her wedding dress
I pull it, folded, from my purse
and with it, dab my eyes,
then lay it in the box, which I close tight to hide
my troubled memories away again

Vegetation is turning yellow
Flowers are wilting
Tempers are rising
Air conditioners are cranking away

People sit idly in chairs, not moving,
staring at screens,
mesmerized,
until they fall asleep
Too hot to garden
Too hot to clean
Too hot to neighbor
Everyone is hiding

We are held hostage
by our weather.
Why do we live in
a climate like this?
Our children are
here, or our parents.
No other reason
unless it's our jobs.
Money is important.
How is love abundant
in the world full of snares
in a conglomerate oasis of identity faces
A coalition of humanity unraveled unhappy
Poor the souls adventure forth unknown
caring not for one another no one claims
Their sisters or brothers phallus hierarchies governmental force
Hatred on Earth a living hell
Love lost humanity hatred as risen its course
The complexity of the anguish and the pains
Yet remain humanity at strange
Demons forces inspiring grabbing embracing the hearts
Those the hearts of the living devouring the souls of the Dead
How can these misplaced individuals be offered off so they dread
In a confinement of denial love is held hostage place in a box and the key is lost
What have we now we have failed ?
Hatred on Earth the living hell
For love no longer exists all that exists is hatred in hell

Surrounded by talking morons
Incessant talkers
Who have nothing to say
Yet do nothing but speak
and speak and speak
and speak and speak and speak
I roll my eyes inside my head as they yap
Communing secretly with another silent one
Wondering if she is on the same wavelength
I laugh when she rolls her eyes, on the outside where I can see
Matter of fact, I cannot stop laughing, and neither can she
We begin eating in a different place, away from our coworkers
who remain constant in their willingness to sit silently while one
yapper who has no new ideas and nothing to say keeps them hostage
