“The flower of youth,” that’s what Ma said,
the day we packed the wagon.
She tussled my hair and planted a kiss
on my cheek and tin cans to the tail gate draggin’
My bride, my Peg, she hopped on aboard
while her Ma, Nellie, stood by bawlin'.
Dad stood by the farm house door
and Ole Red stood aside him howlin'.
We left from Pennsylvania aimed for Oregon
I’m not sure we woulda gone if we’d new,
all the loss a comin’ afore the shores of Avalon,
land of milk and honey, where apple trees are strewn.
Peg-a-my-heart, fair she was, and our baby she was carrying,
we’d lose that chil’, I’d lose my Peg, before we hit Missouri .
I sold the wagon, and bought them a stone, markin' the place I’d laid them
and off I went on a cattle drive a broken man in a hurry.
A cowboys life was all I had, a horse and my whiskey
and every night afore I’d sleep I’d sing “Oh, Peg-o-my heart…I miss ye”
*this was what it was like to be a cowboy
I walk the same path every morning…bright and early…every day…where I’m greeted by the same sounds…the same trees…the same animals along the way.
I never find it boring..and no….I’m not a nut…it’s just I find my solace and my comfort in what some would call…my rut.
Today I was a little shocked when my routine became disrupted…when my normal path was blocked and my walk was interrupted.
It was obvious my walk today wouldn’t be like every other day…that in order to finish what I started…I’d have to walk another way.
Quickly realizing this little glitch didn’t warrant my worry or my wrath…I took a little detour…down a less familiar path.
I decided to embrace my detour…so on and on I pushed…until I noticed up ahead of me…a rabbit in a bush.
It seemed to me the more he tried to hop away…the more he would stay put…and the more the leaves and branches of that bush became entangled with his foot.
I leaned down saying, “Don’t worry little rabbit…I took a wrong path too…it seems that you are stuck…let me see what I can do.”
The rabbit sensed I was not dangerous…he seemed to understand..he knew that I was here to help…still…he closely watched my hands,
I worked with his foot and the bush…being as gentle as I could be…and in a little while…the rabbit’s foot was free.
“Hop away little rabbit…your foot is free.” I cried…and after a moments hesitation…the rabbit tentatively complied.
He hopped around a little bit…then turned around as if he wanted to say…
Thank you…for your help…before he finally hopped away.
And I wondered if my normal path being blocked was a coincidence…or could it possibly be…I was sent in this direction because a rabbit needed me.
I guess I’ll never know…but never again will I be shocked when my everyday routine becomes disrupted…when my normal path is blocked…when my walk is interrupted.
As Reginald Rabbit hopped through the woods
He heard a voice say “Hey”
He stopped to see a teenage rabbit
Wearing a cap with the name Ray
“Hey Dude”,he said to Reginald
“Can you tell me the way to the stream”
“Im meeting up with the boys tonight”
“Dude… Its gonna be extreme”!
Reginald pointed toward the stream
Ray began to hop away
He stopped ,turned around and with a cheeky grin
“Cheers big ears” to Reginald he did say
“Cheers Big Ears” Reginald indignantly muttered to himself
“And seriously addressing me as “Hey Dude”
Reginald somewhat cranky now moaned
“Honestly, the rabbit youth of today are so rude”!!

Burning strong
From dusk to dawn
Shoutout to Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong
Just trying to hit home and go way beyond
Don't overlook every song
Migh just be here for awhile, or not that long
Regarding me being gone
Above and below clod
Near and far from plants with or without pods
And any other fronds
A frog swam in a pond
Then hopped upon a log
Within a bog
Before and after there was fog
A hog began to trod
Meanwhile a fawn
Started to yawn
When a dog ran across a lawn
As other organisms continued on
Whether or not they clawed
And pawed
Whether or not with(in) shod
Thankful that another day was saw
With or without occasional feelings of awe
By net or fishing rod
Aquatic lifeforms caught, including cod
Is religion one big facade
Including in gods
Was it made up by someone being a fraud
All across the solar system, occurs phenomenon
Don't think you know it all because you've got it wrong
Regardless of any echelon
Belief in ramadan
Or if it has to do with the autobahn
Some just want to con, rob
And always do you wrong
Even their own mom
I don't follow any psalms
Never once did I think the world was in my palm
Just tried to remain humble and calm
Meanwhile too many threatened lives with bombs
Continuing to have qualms
I wonder why there are so many different laws
And folks at odds
People bouncing side to side faster than ping pong
Truly acting like ding dongs
Unwilling to follow through on a big job
Just no comparison to King Kong
Life is a series of circles…each second circles into each minute,
each minute into each hour, each hour into each day…
Each circle has it’s own attraction…It’s own unique rhythm and beat.
and we do our best to find as much beauty as we can
In every circle we complete.
Yesterday’s circle began as most days do…nothing too extreme…
when my eyes opened…deciding it was time to step out of my dream.
On my morning walk…around one corner my favorite rabbit was waiting there
as I greeted the stars, the planets and the moon the aroma of jasmine filled the air.
Deborah and I loaded up our Subaru with the needed odds and ends
then headed to the causeway to go kayaking with friends.
We watched the sunrise over the water,
saw pelicans fly and dolphins swim…just a little out of reach…
then kayaked over to an island where we walked along the beach.
We heard from our daughter Ali…something we think is pretty cool.
Next year she stars a new job…at an elementary school.
We had lunch with our daughter-in-law Amy…
She was dropping Juniper, their dog, for us to dog sit overnight….
She paid us off with cheese pizza…we loved every bite.
We took a nap, went to the grocery store…and for dinner…leftover pizza was a must….
we ate all the cheesy parts while Juniper ate the crust.
We watched an old movie on TV
then did something that for a while we’ve delayed…
we drove by a friends yard in the evening…to see the improvements she has made.
With yesterday’s circle complete…even thought it was nothing too extreme…
there was a smile on my face when my eyes decided it was time to step into a dream.
This morning another unique circle began…on my walk I heard a mockingbird's song…
and I could tell by how fast she hopped away my rabbit friend was not happy
that I brought Juniper along.
A furry little caterpillar
Crawled onto my knee
He turned into a butterfly
And landed in a tree
Beside him was a humming bird
Sucking pollen from a rose
When down fell an inchworm
That landed on my nose
A little baby bunny rabbit
Hopped onto my lap
When I started petting him
His ears began to flap
I came across a rooster
Sitting on a fence
A sign said "you can pet him
For only fifty cents"
As I peeked into a sty
I heard a great big thud
I saw the three little piggy's
Rolling in the mud
I looked up in the sky
And I saw a lonesome goose
I whistled "where are you flying to"
He replied. "to visit Dr. Seuss
The Doctor wasn't in that day
But a cool cat in a hat
Offered him green eggs and ham
Well what d' you make of that!

Finally my blood began to coagulate, the bleeding had stopped.
Not sure how far along the tunnel I had come. All the way I hopped.
Now to make my way out of this loathsome place.
Cobwebs drooped from the ceiling like filigree lace.
I stepped carefully over sodden earth, choking on the thick rancid air.
The pain from my wounded leg was throbbing and becoming hard to bear.
Dimly lit this tunnel seemed endless. Glimmers of hope mixed with fright.
Will I emerge from this horrid place, is this tunnel to be my tomb, my plight?
Eerie noises pierced the silence, and seemed to signal doom.
Wished I was home again in my own peaceful, pretty room.
Peering into the darkness there seemed to be eyes ahead staring at me.
“hello, is someone there?” No answer so I called again most warily.
The ‘eyes’ were not seen again. I guess it was my imagination.
Am I first to discover this fearsome tunnel since the beginning of creation?
My mind is wandering losing control, getting harder to keep on going.
A sharp turn to the right, the air feels fresher, a soft breeze is blowing.
It has to be coming from outside in the open, this must be the way out.
I tripped and nearly fell, and let out a small yelp, Suddenly I hear a shout.
“We are coming “ says the voice, “Are you OK?” I have been found.
My trembling voice tries to answer, but try as I will I can’t make a sound.
Scooped up by two burley men they carry me out to the bright sunshine.
My leg is cleaned and dressed, as they lay me back to rest, feeling fine.
Timmy blew some bubbles and he watched them Pop! Pop! Pop!
But one went higher than the trees and right over the top
That one big bubble floated high as though it couldn’t stop
And just before it reached the sky it then began to drop
Timmy stood and marvelled at the colours in its skin
How could skin so very thin have all those colours in
It came down low and bounced right off a nearby wheelie bin
To land on Timmy’s shoulder and that really made him grin
For Timmy’s at a new school so he walks alone today
He hasn’t any friends with whom to talk along the way
The bubble on his shoulder sat as though it wants to play
And still the bubble didn’t pop which brightened up his day
Now when nobody talks to you it’s easy to pretend
So Timmy just imagined that he had a bubble friend
He hoped the bubble wouldn’t pop for school’s just round the bend
And no more would he sit alone and wait for school to end
He walked into his morning class and Suzie Laine was there
She was very pretty and had very lovely hair
She said I like your bubble, I don’t know if you’re aware
This desk isn’t taken, why don’t you pull up a chair
The bubble on his shoulder did a funny little hop
It landed on his desk and and made a funny little ‘Plop!’
He and Suzie giggled as it hopped and didn’t stop
But can a bubble smile?
This one did
and then went Pop!
All in the glow
I hung from the moon with a finger to spare
Captured the stars that you wear in your hair
Hopped on a comet that wasn’t aware
All in the glow of your love
I swan in an ocean of rivers and streams
Rode on a wave that was found in my dreams
Floated for days or that’s just how it seems
All in the glow of your love
I walked through a garden of rose petal pink
Talked with a butterfly that made me think
Watered a poem with morning dew ink
All in the glow of your love
I wake up each day with a smile on my face
Gaze on your beauty I so long to trace
Bask in the warmth I could never replace
All in the glow of your love
Good morning Soupers
Its pools of elastic black oil
that pulls lines and curves
spaces pausing words
a flick of a tale
a flick of a tail
tendrilled T's that stretch and yawn
U's that capture like cups
O's that don't stop or start
slytherin squiggles of serpentine s's
i hang a hammock between too Y'S
not too wise
without the h would it urt
scratching scrawls that screech of something soulless
feathered fails and faltered falls
scripts of pain and love that came before
lies that slip the silence
truths that never shared
Hope that just hopped by
Fear pulled sorry by the ear
until it shed a tear
Eating away at the hate
What words will i let go
which will i store for another
Which sword is wrnog
which rite is write
