Ica

The memory of you, of us, exists inside my mind
It fades with age and I’m afraid it’s bound to crack

I still see our hair entangled, brown woven strands
laid together resting, watching, from the comfort of a backpack

the stars above still shine, just as they did back then
but that midnight field is never coming back

No more will sudden dew soaks through our socks
no more time spent gazing at that never-ending black

I loved you once, and I will love you til I die
that place is gone, lost to time, but these words will never crack

Jornada

Jornada

A vida é
uma jornada,
cheio de
voltas,
e às vezes
a estrada f
ica pedregosa,
e o caminho
parece difícil
de discernir.

Apenas continue,
coloque um pé
na frente
do outro,
e vai aparecer
o caminho;
de fazer
com pouco,
muito e muito.

Premium MemberIzabranica, My Favorite Word

My pools of words are not limited to English.
I was a missionary in France and Belgium, so learned French.
I studied Spanish in college for several years afterwards.
The US Army had me learn Russian during the Cold War,
Then cross-trained me into Serbo-Croatian during the Bosnia/Kosovo Wars.
I spent about 7 years stationed-residing in West Germany and Germany.
Like German, Slavic-derived languages are very root-driven.
The most romantic word I ever heard is "izabranica" (pronounced izabranitsa).
Typical banal English translations do not give the word justice.
Usually it is put forward as an endearment such as 'darling' or 'sweetheart'.
But my favorite Serbo-Croatian word means so much more.
The root of the word is 'bran'; 'braniti' means to select or gather.
The suffix 'ica' is a feminine ending, often used for people.
The prefix 'iza' means "out from". So what does "izabranica' really mean?
Means more than just your one true love; more than just your soulmate...
It means the woman you chose out from among all others, your izabranica.

My Professor

He really does me in...

He mispronounces “America”
Says he has a passport from somewhere-ica
Therefore thinks he’s a citizen
Then, oh Lord, we begin again

And, he just goes on....

He has been a poor dirt farmer from long ago
A businessman twice owned
An accountant is what I am looking for
Since this is what I am going towards

No need for presentations...

He can just talk it all out and about
Explain Balance sheets and Income Statements
All with his hands and to his credit
He does not even have to edit

I’m learning very well...

My scores are low
My eyes are heavy, half the class is asleep
I keep wondering, “What am I doing here?”
Please tell me, is it him or just me?
