Alice Tai

Alice is only 17 so put her studies on hold,
Of psychology, English literature and art,
To train for the Rio Paras, hard as she could,
In New Milton, in Collegiate’s school pool.

Born with a club foot, she’s had 14 operations,
Which fused her feet and ankles, 90 degrees,
Because she also has deformed lower legs -
So she was classed as a para-swimmer 2010.

In 2014 Alice competed in the Euro Champs,
In Eindhoven which is in the Netherlands,
Where she won a gold 50m freestyle relay,
A silver in the 100m back, a bronze freestyle.

Then the next year Alice went to the Worlds,
IPC, in Glasgow where she won four medals:
A gold 4x100 medley relay, bronze 100m back,
Bronze fly, and a bronze 4x100m free relay.

So in Rio she achieved much, a great success,
Because she won 4x100 medley relay gold,
Also a bronze for the S10 100m backstroke.
She was born on the 31st January in 1999.

Stephanie Millward

Just after diagnosis with MS,
Stephanie took injections,
Beta interferon injections,
Which saw her to Beijing.

She was originally, in the past,
A British team swimmer,
A really good swimmer,
So she continued on in the Paras.

2010 and the World Champs,
Held in the city of Eindhoven,
In Holland, where lies Eindhoven,
Holland is also called the Netherlands.

There Stephanie won five silvers,
Plus one very sure bronze,
Proud of that bronze,
So she qualified for the Euros.

2011 and in Berlin, DE,
Stephanie won three golds,
Add two silvers onto these golds,
To get the result.

At the London Paralympics,
Stephanie won four silvers,
Three were individual silvers,
Plus one 4x100m relay bronze.

In 2013, the Worlds, Montreal,
Golds: Stephanie won four,
Her prides came to four,
Plus one shining silver.

Then 2014 at the Euros,
In Eindhoven she sealed six golds,
Add one silver onto these golds,
And also one bronze.

In Rio Stephanie won two more golds,
One for the 100m backstroke,
No more an S9, now S8 backstroke,
And one for the 4x100m medley relay.

Jessica-Jane Applegate

Jessica-Jane is best known for London 2012,
When she won the gold in a dramatic finish,
In the swimming 200 metres freestyle event,
In the S14 class, for intellectual disabilities.

She has autism and was born in August 1996,
She was the first S14 swimmer to win a gold.
For her performance at 2012 and charity work,
She was awarded the MBE 2013 for her efforts.

Since 2013 she’s been a Mencap ambassador,
Where she’s raised funds and much awareness,
And she’s also involved in as an ambassador for,
The Norwich City Community Sports Foundation.

In 2013 at the World Champs, Montreal, Canada,
Jessica-Jane won the gold plus a silver, a bronze,
And then in 2014 in Eindhoven in the Netherlands,
She won silver for the free, bronzes back, medley.

Jessica-Jane took two golds, and in the freestyle,
She won the silver, so in the 2016 Euros, Portugal,
Jessica-Jane won one gold free, and two silvers.

But to make it to Rio this champ needed surgery,
‘Cos there was something wrong with her throat.
She got this, and in Rio she won freestyle silver,
Individual medley silver and backstroke bronze.

Matt Wylie

Matt’s dad Mike works in IT for Nissan,
So when he won gold at Rio de Janerio,
For the 100m freestyle in the S9 category,
Nissan made him a gold car, a LEAF.

The LEAF is one of the new electric cars,
And to get to his physiotherapy sessions,
In the two years building up to Rio 2016,
Matt had been driving in a white LEAF.

He was born with cerebral palsy, just mild,
On the 14th day of October’s month, 1996,
And first represented Britain in Eindhoven,
Which is in Holland, at the Euros in 2014.

There he placed just outside the medals,
So in 2016 Funchal, which is Portuguese,
At the Euros, in the 50m free he won gold,
And in the 4x100m freestyle relay, bronze.

Scott Quin

Scott was born premature, five weeks,
With his brain fused to his skull,
It was Crouzon syndrome, dysostosis,
And doctors operated to null.

He was a strong wee tike and survived,
Edinburgh born, 1st July 1990,
S14, SB14 and SM14 are his categories,
Which he embraces fully.

At the Royal Commonwealth Pool he trains,
Under Kris Gilchrist tough,
His breakthrough swim was in Manchester,
2011, British Champs rough.

The games at the London Aquatics Centre,
Saw him swim into fifth,
That was in 2012; now he’s won medals,
With an International cloth.

2014 and Eindhoven in the Netherlands,
Scott sealed the silver;
2015 Glasgow at the World Championships,
Scott won another silver.

In Portugal’s Funchal at the Europeans,
He loudly struck the gold,
And then in Rio in the 100m breaststroke,
A silver he did hold.
